Most dental offices think they’re compliant but small things often get overlooked until they’re pointed out during an inspection.

From OSHA protocols to HIPAA gaps, it’s usually not the big issues it’s the little details that add up. ⚠️

Taking the time to review and fix those areas now can save a lot of stress later. ✅

🦷 We focus so much on PPE, sterilization, and protocols…but the most powerful infection control tool is still the simplest one:

👉 Hand hygiene

According to the CDC, it’s the #1 way to prevent the spread of infection in healthcare settings including dentistry.

And yet…

📊 Healthcare providers only perform hand hygiene about 40% of the times they should.

🚻 And yes….it’s NOT consistently done even after using the restroom.

Let that sink in. 🤮

Why this matters in dental settings:

Every patient interaction involves exposure to:
• Saliva
• Blood
• Contaminated surfaces

Skipping hand hygiene even once increases the risk of cross-contamination.

What proper hand hygiene actually looks like:

✔ Before and after every patient
✔ After contact with bodily fluids or surfaces
✔ After removing gloves (they are NOT a substitute)
✔ Soap & water when visibly soiled, sanitizer for routine use

This isn’t about adding more to your workflow. It’s about doing the one thing that makes the biggest difference consistently.

🚨 Compliance Confessions 🚨

Sometimes we walk into dental practices and……we just have to pause.

This week’s discovery?

A filthy dental materials fridge that doubled as a snack station!! 🥪🦷 Yes, restoration materials sitting next to someone’s lunch.

And before you ask…yes, these people actually exist. 🤪

Let’s be clear: this isn’t just a quirky office habit, it’s a serious compliance issue.

According to OSHA and CDC guidelines:

❌ Food and beverages must NEVER be stored with clinical or dental materials

❌ Dental materials must be stored in a clean, designated, and contamination-free environment

❌ Cross-contamination risks can directly impact patient safety and staff health

Mixing the two? That’s a hard no.

Proper storage protocols aren’t just about passing inspections, they’re about protecting your team, your patients, and your practice reputation.

💡 Compliance Tip:

Keep a clearly labeled, separate refrigerator for dental materials ONLY and designate a completely different space for food storage.

No exceptions.

Because “lunch with a side of dental materials” should never be on the menu.
