Happy 5/29 Day!

If you're wondering why May 29th is relevant, you're likely not alone. A 529 plan is an education savings vehicle named after section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code, designating them as "Qualified Tuition Programs".

529 plans are designed to help families save for future education expenses with earnings growing tax-deferred, and tax-free withdrawals when used for qualifying education expenses. Just recently, legislation passed allowing 529 plans to be converted to a Roth IRA in the future as well!

Additionally, if you've ever wondered how a 401(k), 403(b), or 457 got their names, they're all named after the section of the IRC detailing the plans. The more you know...

One of the many benefits of a Roth IRA is the ability to access your contributions prior to age 59 1/2.

With that said, let's breakdown the math if it makes sense to do so...
Hypothetical Assumptions:
-Age 35
-Needs 15,000 for an unexpected expense.
-$50,000 Roth IRA Balance
-$30,000 in Contributions

Potential Future Value of $15,000 staying in the Roth IRA until age 60 with a projected 7% Return... $81,411.

Total Cost of a 5 year loan @ 8 Percent Annually:
$18,249
-Monthly payments of $304.15

That is an opportunity cost of over $60,000! When considering taking a distribution from a retirement account, carefully consider the penalties, if applicable, as well as the net cost & opportunity costs.
Many employers offer loan provisions on plans like 403b's and 401ks, which provides temporary liquidity at a reasonable cost.

As always, with any major financial decision like these, it's important to review all of your options to determine which path is the best for you.

Congratulations to the Louisville Leopards on winning their 1st State Championship in Program History!

It was so fun following this team all year as they played teams across the country, preparing for their tournament run.

Coach Sig has put so much time into this program over the last 18 years, and I am so happy for him and the rest of The Program that they got to cut down the nets in Dayton this past weekend!

A few weeks ago, I attended our Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City, for the Vice Presidents in Equitable across the country.

The Head of Advice and Wealth Management, Jim Mellin, spoke about the challenges of starting a career in Financial Services. One of the challenges in becoming an advisor is the licensing process, and passing 4 different industry exams.

His key message- Don't let a short term obstacle deter you from a long term opportunity. When looking at a 35 year career, that several month study process breaks down to less than half of a percent of someone's overall career!

It's difficult to look beyond the challenges immediately ahead, and ignore your long term goals you've laid out for yourself.

At the end of our last day, our Keynote speaker, The "Iron Cowboy" shared a similar message. A few years ago he set out to run 100 Ironman Triathlons in 100 consecutive days. (Yes, you read that right.) At one point during his challenge, he was discouraged and felt that he couldn't go on any further. The piece of advice that helped him finish what he set out to do: "Just show up tomorrow and start."

March 1st, 2025
It's always a highlight of the year when we get to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of the Equitable Advisors in Mid America at our annual Awards Banquet.

This year was even more special, as Rachel Israel was recognized for her hard work and commitment to her career. Only 2 years into the business, she was awarded the Centurion award, which is an incredible accomplishment! Congratulations on the award, Rachel. Many more to come!

As a teenager, I used to mow lawns and landscape to save up for my first vehicle. One of those yards I mowed was my grandfather's, where he would have me send him a monthly invoice of each time I mowed throughout the month, and how much he "owed" me for my services.

He always encouraged me to set aside a portion of those dollars towards a savings account that wouldn't be touched, and even helped me set up my first investment account. What started as a very minimal amount, has since grown substantially! As grateful as I am for him providing me work at the time, I'm even more appreciative for the life lesson, and him helping me get started on my investing journey at a young age!

I recently had the opportunity to speak to a class of High School students where we went through the exercise, and it was very eye opening for the students to see the "Cost of living" and all of the expenses that come with it!

It's never too early to start teaching your kids the importance of a rainy day fund, or the power of compound interest.

Think you’ll never have to ask for help? Here’s your chance to prove it.

This year, our team at Equitable Advisors is continuing to grow and looking to bring on more Financial Professionals, as well as an administrative assistant for our Canton Office.

We've had several people join Equitable Advisors in the last few years, either straight out of school, or as career changers. We are looking to hire someone who is driven, has a desire to help people, and is extremely personable.

If you, or anyone you know may be interested in either of these positions, please let me know and I will be glad to reach out to them.
Thanks in advance!
