The Retirement Withdrawal Guessing Game
(Names changed for this story)

“We just pulled money when we needed it.”

Tom retired at 62 with “almost a million dollars,” which sounded like more than enough.

His plan?

“Take some from savings, some from IRAs, maybe Social Security later… we’ll figure it out.”

For the first few years, everything felt fine. Then:
-the market dropped
-they withdrew anyway
-taxes were higher than expected
-Medicare premiums increased because of taxable income
-and they accidentally drained the wrong accounts first

By age 73, required minimum distributions pushed them into a higher tax bracket.

Tom said:
“Nobody explained that where you pull money from matters as much as how much you have.”

What went wrong:
They had investments, but not an income distribution strategy.

What an advisor might have caught:
-Sequence of returns risk
-Tax-efficient withdrawal order
-Roth conversion opportunities
-Social Security timing analysis
-Medicare IRMAA planning
