Myth: your 401(k) automatically comes with you when you leave a job.

Reality: it doesn't. It stays parked with your old employer β€” and cashing it out can mean a brutal tax hit plus penalties.

1099 folks and job-changers: you have options. A 401(k) can be rolled over and kept working for you without triggering taxes today.

Single parents: your paycheck does the work of two.

When you're the only income in the house, everything rests on your ability to keep earning. So here's a question most of us never ask until it's too late: what happens to the kids if you can't work for a while?

That's where living benefits come in. Many modern life insurance policies can be designed to let you access part of the benefit while you're still living β€” if a serious illness or injury keeps you off the job. It's not just protection for when you're gone. It's a backstop for the hard seasons in between.

What would your family need covered first? Tell me in the comments. πŸ‘‡

Self-employed folks: what's the one money habit you swear by now that you wish you'd started at 25? πŸ‘‡

Myth: "I'll get life insurance when I'm older."

Reality: waiting is the most expensive move you can make. Rates climb every year you age, and one health change can shut the door completely.

Self-employed? Nobody's setting this up for you. The best policy is the one that's in place before you need it.

If you're self-employed, you're also your own benefits department. 🧾

No company 401(k). No employer match. No pension waiting at the finish line. Whatever you build for retirement, you build yourself.

That's exactly why how a policy is designed matters so much. An Indexed Universal Life (IUL) policy can be structured to build cash value that grows tax-deferred β€” and for many families it can be designed so that money may be accessed tax-free later when it's set up correctly. But a poorly structured policy can quietly work against you: too much cost, too little funding, weaker long-term growth.

Same product name. Very different outcomes. The design is everything.

Comment "IUL" and I'll send you a plain-English breakdown β€” no pressure, just clarity.

Myth: "I've got life insurance through work, so I'm set."

Reality: that coverage usually disappears the day you leave the job β€” and if you're self-employed, it was never there to begin with. A policy you own follows you to any job, any city, any season of life.

1099 folks: this one's on you to set up. Good news is it may cost less than you think.

Myth: "I'm self-employed, so I don't really need benefits β€” I'll just handle it myself." πŸ€”

Here's what nobody tells the 1099 crowd: when you work for yourself, you are the benefits department. No group life insurance. No 401(k) match. No paid time off if you get sick or hurt. If your income stops, everything you're building stops with it.

That's not meant to scare anyone β€” it's just the math of one income with no safety net behind it. The good news: you can build your own. Life insurance with living benefits, your own retirement plan, a real emergency cushion. It just has to be on purpose, not by accident.

So a real question for you: if your income stopped tomorrow for 3 months, how long could your household hold steady? Drop a number in the comments β€” I'm curious where most people really stand. πŸ‘‡
