One Medicare topic that has been getting more attention lately involves GLP-1 medications.

These medications have become widely discussed in healthcare in recent years, especially in relation to weight management and chronic condition support.

Historically, Medicare has generally not covered GLP-1 medications when they are prescribed solely for weight management. However, beginning July 1, 2026, CMS is introducing a temporary demonstration program that may allow eligible Medicare beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications through December 31, 2027.

So why is this getting attention?

Because GLP-1 medications are part of a broader conversation in healthcare around obesity treatment, chronic disease management, and evolving approaches to care. Access and affordability have been ongoing challenges for many individuals.

A few important things to know:

- This is a temporary CMS demonstration program and not a permanent change to Medicare coverage
- Eligibility and access will depend on specific program criteria and approval requirements
- CMS will use information from this demonstration to help evaluate outcomes and future policy considerations
- This reflects ongoing efforts within Medicare to study new approaches to chronic condition management

Programs like this are often closely watched because they can help inform future discussions about how Medicare approaches certain types of care.

For beneficiaries and those helping them navigate Medicare, being aware of these developments can simply help provide better context around how the program is changing over time.

One thing I’ve been talking with a lot of clients about lately is how Medicare continues to change year after year.

Most people assume that once they enroll in Medicare, everything stays mostly the same — but that isn’t really the case.

For example, there has been increased discussion around prior authorization requirements in certain Medicare services. Traditionally, Original Medicare has had limited prior authorization compared to many private insurance plans. More recently, a small pilot program in select states is testing how certain services may be reviewed before approval in specific situations.

It’s still early, but developments like this are worth paying attention to because they reflect how Medicare continues to evolve over time.

A few other areas I always encourage people to stay aware of include:

-Changes to prescription drug coverage and pricing
-Updates to medication coverage and formulary structures
-Annual adjustments to premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing
-Ongoing use of technology in healthcare administration and decision-making
-Year-to-year updates to Medicare rules and plan details

The biggest takeaway is this: Medicare is not a “set it and forget it” program.

It works best when people stay informed and periodically review changes so they understand how updates may relate to their coverage and healthcare planning.

If you’re on Medicare or helping someone who is, staying informed can help reduce surprises and improve confidence in your healthcare decisions.

One conversation I believe is incredibly important when approaching Medicare is discussing the financial impact a cancer diagnosis can have.

Many people assume Medicare automatically covers “everything,” but the reality is that treatment costs, deductibles, coinsurance, travel, prescriptions, and unexpected out-of-pocket expenses can add up quickly.

According to the American Cancer Society, most cancers are diagnosed in adults age 65 and older, which is why understanding healthcare coverage during retirement matters so much.

This is why education is so important:
✔️ Understanding out-of-pocket exposure
✔️ Reviewing prescription coverage
✔️ Planning ahead before health issues arise
✔️ Knowing what supplemental protection options exist

These conversations are never about fear — they’re about preparation and helping people make informed decisions before they need to use their coverage.

The earlier people start learning about Medicare, the more confident and prepared they can feel about the future.
