What should you do with an old 401(k), 403(b), or Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) after leaving a job? In many cases, you have four options:

📌 Leave your retirement account where it is. This is simple and maintains its tax-advantaged status. Just be sure you understand how to access and manage your retirement account.

🔁 Roll over your old retirement account into your new workplace retirement account. It maintains your account's tax advantages and can be easier to manage. To do this, your current workplace retirement account must accept rollovers. It could require a waiting period. If you have Roth assets, check that your new workplace retirement account accepts them.

🔁 Roll over your old retirement account into a Traditional and/or Roth IRA. This move also preserves tax-advantaged status for your retirement savings and may give you more investment options than a workplace retirement fund.

💵 Cash out your old retirement account. You should know that cashing out a retirement account, especially before age 59½, can cause you to owe taxes and/or penalties. While there are a few important exceptions to this, consider consulting a tax professional before taking this step.

👉 Before you take any action on an old retirement account, compare your investment options and be sure you understand any required minimum balances and fees.

These two things are the foundation for any solid investing strategy.
