Employer health benefit costs are projected to rise 8.2% in 2027, the largest increase since 2003.

For many medical practices, the instinct is to trim the plan or pass the increase along to employees. There is usually a better path.

Contribution strategy, plan choice, funding arrangement, and how the change is explained to your team can all soften an increase without taking benefits away from the people who keep the practice running.

The renewal is a number. What you do with it is a strategy.

Even if your benefits package is strong, employees might feel confused. 🤔

At the end of the day, a benefits package is only truly impactful if employees actually understand what's available to them.

Employees often have questions after onboarding and open enrollment. To mitigate confusion, employers should communicate their benefits consistently, simply, and ensure information is readily accessible.

Maryland’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program is moving forward, and there are several important steps employers should be completing. ⏰

Upcoming FAMLI action items:
• Employer Registration: All employers with at least one employee working in Maryland are required to register through the FAMLI employer portal. Initial registration must be completed by an Authorized Officer.
• November 15, 2026: Deadline for employers intending to pursue a private FAMLI plan for 2027 must submit their Declaration of Intent (DOI).

More important dates:
• January 1, 2027: FAMLI contributions and employee withholding are scheduled to begin.
• April 2027: Quarterly wage and hour reporting and contribution remittance are scheduled to begin.
• January 1, 2028: FAMLI benefits are scheduled to become available to eligible employees.
