Big welcome to the Financial Ed Commission! We are so pumped to have you at the table!

I’m honored to be appointed by Speaker Joseline Peña-Melnyk to The Maryland Financial Education and Capability Commission.

The commission is responsible for providing the Governor and General Assembly with recommendations to improve the financial capabilities of those in low-to-moderate-income communities.

Financial literacy is an issue I am passionate about. We must do more to ensure that all Marylanders have the skills to navigate a dizzying number of modern financial challenges and potential pitfalls.

For the last two sessions, I have sponsored legislation that would require financial literacy be taught statewide in our high schools. And over the summer, I participated in a productive meeting with leadership at the Maryland State Department of Education and state Board of Education to help move this closer to reality.

I am very much looking forward to working with the talented individuals on this commision and I’m grateful to Speaker Peña-Melnyk for her confidence in me.

Tomi Hiers appreciation post!

Tomi has been a steadfast of CASH since our early days at the Baltimore CASH Campaign when she was a Deputy Mayor in Baltimore City. No matter what job she held (and she's held several great ones!), she's always supported families and workers.

Her support has been transformative to us and we came together to say THANK YOU as she transitions off our board. We honored her transitions with a custom pet portrait of her beloved pup. Thank you so much, Tomi!

When Ariana Williams joined the Guaranteed Income Pilot, she was unemployed and doing everything she could to provide for her daughter.

Within the first month of payments, she:
✅ Secured her first apartment
✅ Landed a new job
✅ Opened a savings account for emergencies

Recently, Ariana shared her story to support legislation that would build on this work. One line in particular stays with us:

“Please never think that anybody has malicious intent behind their need for help.”
