Every day, Maryland's workers show up — for their families, their communities, their jobs. Labor Day is about honoring that effort.

We get to see the other side of hard work pay off: a family claiming a tax credit they'd never known about, a first Bank On Maryland account opened, a budget that finally has breathing room. None of that happens by accident — it happens because someone worked hard and had the right support to make that work count.

Free tax preparation, financial coaching, and benefits screening exist to make sure Maryland's workers get the full value of what they've earned. That's not a safety net. That's making work pay the way it should.

Happy Labor Day to everyone doing the work.

If CASH Campaign of Maryland has helped you — whether through free tax preparation, financial coaching, benefits screening, or one of our workshops — we'd be grateful for a moment of your time.

Word of mouth is how most Marylanders find out this kind of support exists for free. A quick Google review helps the next person find us before they ever have to ask.

Maryland's individual tax filing system is getting its first major upgrade in over 30 years.

Starting September 1, 2026, the Comptroller of Maryland is launching Maryland Tax Connect for individual taxpayers — replacing legacy systems like iFile with a single portal for filing returns, making payments, checking refund status, and managing tax accounts online.

For the households CASH Campaign of Maryland works with, this matters beyond convenience. A modernized, more accessible system means fewer barriers for people navigating their taxes without a preparer — real-time account information, clearer self-service tools, and one login instead of several disconnected ones.

If you or someone you work with filed or paid through the old portal, note the transition: online filing and payment services were paused for migration in late August and go live again September 1.

Back-to-school shopping is done. The August credit card bill hasn't landed yet. For a lot of Maryland households, September isn't a fresh start — it's the month the last one catches up with you.

That's not a spending problem. It's a timing problem, and it's one of the most common reasons budgets break down heading into fall.

At CASH Campaign of Maryland, we help families build a plan around the months that are actually hard — not the ones a generic budget template assumes. Free financial coaching is available year-round, at any income level.

If August stretched your budget thin, let's rebuild it together: https://cashmd.org/

Financial stability doesn't happen by accident — it happens because organizations like CASH Campaign of Maryland exist to make it possible.

This summer, we're inviting our community to help us go further: more free tax preparation, more financial coaching, more advocacy for policies that create a fairer economic landscape for low-income Marylanders.

Every gift — big or small — helps us reach more families before tax season rolls back around.

Looking for a way to build real-world skills while making a direct impact on Maryland families? The Maryland Community Fellows Program is recruiting.
MCFP is a partnership between CASH Campaign of Maryland, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, and Community Action Agencies across the state. Did you know the rules for charitable donations changed this year?

Starting in 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction can now deduct up to $1,000 (single) or $2,000 (married filing jointly) in cash donations to qualified 501(c)(3) charities — even without itemizing. It's a permanent change under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and it means most everyday donors finally get a tax benefit for giving.

A few things to know about what actually counts:
✅ Cash donations to qualified public charities (check, card, payroll deduction)
❌ Donor-advised funds and most private foundations don't qualify for this new deduction
❌ Non-cash gifts (stock, clothing, goods) aren't eligible for the above-the-line deduction — those still require itemizing

If you itemize instead, note the new rule: charitable deductions are now only counted above 0.5% of your adjusted gross income.
Maryland donors have an extra opportunity, too: through the state's Community Investment Tax Credit program, gifts of $500+ to qualified nonprofits can earn a 50% Maryland state tax credit — on top of your federal and state deduction.
Giving smart is just as important as giving generously. As always, talk to a tax professional about your specific situation — but understanding the basics helps you make the most of every dollar you give.

Consumers lost $15.9 billion to fraud in 2025 — up from $12.5 billion the year before.

CASH Campaign of Maryland is partnering with Consumer Action and Early Warning Services to help Baltimore-area advocates fight back. On September 16, we're co-hosting "Just Say No to Scams: Protecting Consumers and Communities from Fraud" — a free, in-person training for case managers, counselors, educators, and direct service providers.

You'll walk away with the latest "Just Say No to Scams" toolkit, strategies for identity theft prevention and recovery, and a session from Dr. Jennifer Lawrence of FightCybercrime.org on supporting clients through the shame and isolation that often follow scams. AFC professionals can earn 4 CEUs, and nonprofit attendees can apply for community education stipends.

Big thank you to our partners at Prince George's Community College!

Through the Office of College and Career Transitions, CASH Campaign of Maryland's student Benefit Navigators are now on campus helping PGCC students get connected to 20+ benefit programs — including SNAP — and to PGCC's own great resources, like their financial wellness center and tax prep site.

"This partnership is about students helping students," said PGCC's Chauncy L. Butcher — and we couldn't agree more.

Financial stress shouldn't stand between any student and their degree. We're honored to support PGCC's students and can't wait for another year working alongside their team.

Neighborhood revitalization and displacement prevention aren't opposites — they can work together.

Southwest Partnership is working to revitalize Southwest Baltimore neighborhoods while making sure the people who have called it home can stay here. Since the end of tax season, CASH and SWP have teamed up on several initiatives, including tax education for small businesses and, most recently, a Tax Credit pop-up event hosted at SWP's office.

Our tax team worked one-on-one with community members to determine eligibility and complete Renters' Tax Credit (RTC) and Homeowners' Tax Credit (HTC) applications on the spot, plus connected residents to other CASH services like our Back Tax Program.

This is what community development paired with financial access can look like. Want to bring this kind of direct-assistance event to your community? Reach out to CASH Campaign of Maryland to learn more.
