COBRA can let you temporarily keep your employer-sponsored health insurance after you leave a job or lose eligibility for the plan.

The important catch is that you usually pay the full premium yourself, including the amount your employer previously paid. That can make COBRA considerably more expensive than what you paid while employed.

However, COBRA can be useful if:

- You currently have ongoing medical treatment and/or a surgery scheduled.
- You've already met majority of your plan's deductible or out-of-pocket maximum for the year.

Happy Wednesday! Story time! ✨

This week I was referred to a client in a Facebook group that recently moved from North Carolina. They lost their insurance a few months ago from their former employer and Cobra was going to be too expensive!

The couple was able to qualify for Medicaid in North Carolina but once they moved to Texas, they needed to look at alternative options.

A marketplace plan was going to run them $1700 per month!!! Not to mention, in Texas, you don't have the option of a PPO network through ACA!

Thankfully, I was able to offer a nationwide PPO plan and save about 30% on what they were quoted through the marketplace! Now the couple has coverage, a large network of doctors AND can use the coverage in North Carolina when they visit! 🤩

A high deductible can lead to a more affordable premium, but it is important to know that you will have to meet the deductible to have coverage.

For example: If your medical plan has a $5000 deductible, you must pay the first $5000 of your medical bills, and then the insurance company will start covering costs.

These past two years, I have been working with a lot of teachers in the Belton TX ISD.

Here is an example of the rates these teachers are getting and the premiums have increased over $200 per month from last year. These insurance plans are costing over $1500/month to cover their family. Over $1100 just to add a spouse!

Even with employer contribution, these rates are extremely high!
