Larry Williams, an 86-year-old former IBM salesman, says he tried to withdraw three million dollars from an Edward Jones investment account he has held for two decades. Instead, he says, the company refused to release his funds, questioned his mental competence and suggested he could be the victim of a scam. | Watchdog https://bit.ly/4yUfKcs

If you bought stocks at the peak in 2000, you waited about 13 years just to get back to even.

Now called THE LOST DECADE and it's not a fluke. The S&P 500 didn't sustainably reclaim its March 2000 peak until 2013 (not counting dividends). The Nasdaq took 15 years. The Dow went essentially nowhere from 1966 to 1982. Flat stretches like these are a normal part of market history - the "just buy and hold" crowd just doesn't talk about them.

Why bring it up now? The Dow just hit another all time high while the Nasdaq has been under pressure for weeks. A split that wide between the two is rare, and a similar divergence was flashing right before the 2000 top. (Rebel Capitalist did a great breakdown on this.)

If you're 30, you have time to ride out a lost decade. If you're 55 or 60, it lands right on top of your retirement years, and "it'll come back eventually" is not a plan.

I'm not saying panic. I'm saying autopilot works until the decade it doesn't - and where you are in life matters as much as being in the market.
