The State Treasurer's Office has a basic legal duty: report to the Legislature on the condition of the treasury at the start of each session. For the past three years, the incumbent has delivered that report after the session has adjourned — too late for lawmakers to act upon.

I'll fix it — on-time, plain-English, benchmarked reporting on New Mexico's $20 billion. With that much public money at stake, transparency shouldn't be optional.

The Santa Fe New Mexican asked both candidates where we stand. Read it, and share it if you agree New Mexico deserves a Treasurer who does the fundamental job.

Thanks to the League of Women Voters of Central New Mexico, the Valencia County News-Bulletin, the Village of Los Lunas, and the Greater Valencia County Chamber of Commerce — along with both county party organizations — for putting on Thursday's candidate forum in Los Lunas.

I told the room what I'll tell every voter between now and November: the State Treasurer manages $20 billion of your money, and it should be managed in the open — with the annual report published within six months of the fiscal year's end, not nearly a year later, and results measured against clear benchmarks explained in plain English.

The race for State Treasurer was the only statewide contest with both candidates in the room. I'm glad people heard from each of us — voters deserve to hear from both sides.
