What’s below the surface matters

During recent field work in New Zealand, MYSOIL CLASSIFICATION™ highlighted a profile with excessive moisture retention at ±300 mm depth – conditions not suited for successful establishment.

Identifying these limitations before planting is critical. Soil structure, drainage, and aeration all influence how roots develop and how the orchard will perform long term.

This is where physical soil classification adds value. It allows limiting factors to be identified early, guiding better decisions around site preparation, drainage design, and overall management before trees or vines go into the soil.

Understanding the profile changes the decisions that follow.

Early season performance for Miho Satsumas

This early-season Miho block in New Zealand is running on a full Agri Technovation fertiliser and foliar programme.

The orchard is showing a healthy, well-maintained canopy, with strong fruit set translating into very good fruit size and colour. Crop load is currently estimated at ±60 t/ha.

A clear reflection of a system that has been consistently managed through the season.

Soil-driven management in Golden Kiwifruit

This block is managed on a full Agri Technovation programme, with a focus on improving nutrient availability in high pH soils and strengthening root development.

The approach centred on correcting soil nutrient balance, supported by targeted foliar applications aligned to key phenological stages.

The result is a well-developed root system, a dark green, active canopy, and a crop delivering both high yield and strong fruit quality.

Management aligned to soil conditions. Results that follow.

Envy apple harvest in Gisborne

End of March marked the first pick of Envy apples in Gisborne, with the orchard running on a full Agri Technovation foliar programme.

Early harvest observations show good fruit development and consistency, reflecting a season managed with aligned nutrition and timing.

A strong start to the harvest season.

Collaboration across regions, driven by shared expertise.

The Agri Technovation South Africa team recently spent two days in the field with New Zealand colleagues, Glynn Douglas and Nicolas Swart, alongside Christoff van der Westhuizen and Waldo Krige. Despite average daytime temperatures reaching 40°C, the team covered several orchard visits and engaged in valuable technical discussions.

A key highlight was the opportunity to gain deeper insight into kiwi production from Glynn Douglas, adding valuable perspective to the exchange.

The visit also included time at the Wellington offices, further strengthening alignment between the South Africa and New Zealand teams.

Progress is driven by strong collaboration, shared knowledge, and a global approach to agriculture.

Where we’re AT: Golden Kiwifruit in Te Puke, New Zealand

It’s been a strong growing season for kiwifruit in New Zealand, and even stronger when supported by the right irrigation, soil amendment, and foliar strategies.

These Gold Kiwifruit orchards in the Te Puke area are managed under a full Agri Technovation programme, including a structured ground fertiliser, foliar fertiliser, and fertigation approach designed to support consistent growth and fruit development.

Through precision soil sampling, limiting factors in the soil were identified early on. From there, nutrient strategies were aligned to ensure the vines receive sufficient nutrition during critical phenological stages. The result is a healthy, balanced canopy that supports the development of high-quality kiwifruit.

Products such as Kiwi Early, Kiwi Late, HPNP, and ZMC Release form part of the in-season strategy, with Carbofuel planned post-harvest to help rebuild reserves and prepare the orchard for the next cycle.

Where we’re AT: Avocado Production in Tapora, New Zealand

Avocado orchards in the Tapora area are supported by a full Agri Technovation programme, with a clear focus on early fruit sizing and stress management.

Carbofuel was applied pre-flowering to build plant energy reserves, supporting a strong start to fruit set. Post-flowering, Kelpura was applied to improve calcium uptake and manage stress as the fruit moves through the cell division phase, and later into cell expansion.

By aligning nutrition with crop physiology, the focus remains on faster fruit growth, stronger tree performance, and improved fruit quality.

This is precision nutrition applied with purpose.

As we celebrate this joyful season, we reflect on the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, the greatest gift to humanity.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

This Christmas, we give thanks for God’s blessings — His Son, His grace, and the harvests He provides.

May Christ’s love fill your heart and home with peace and joy, and may your fields be blessed abundantly in the year ahead.

Wishing you a Christmas full of faith, gratitude, and fruitful harvests.
