18 Years. Still Counting the People, Not the Years.

In three months, I'll hit 18 years with NZHL!

When I started in 2008, I thought a few years in a business was a good run. Two, maybe six, then you move on to the next thing. That was the thinking back then.

But something shifts when your work, your purpose, and the people you serve all become the same thing. You stop counting the years. Because it stops feeling like just another business.

Here's what 18 years has taught me: most families don't struggle because they're careless with money. They struggle because no one ever sat down and showed them the full picture. They're working hard. Earning well. And still lying awake wondering if they've set things up right — or if the bank just handed them a 30-year mortgage and waved them out the door.

That weight is real. The quiet stress of a loan that doesn't fit your life. The nagging worry about what happens to your family if something goes wrong. The feeling that you're paying and paying and the finish line never moves.

And here's the part that should stop us all in our tracks: "Only 38 per cent of people between the age of 55 and 64 are mortgage free. Today, about 12% of people aged 65+ are still paying a mortgage, and the same number are renting." — Retirement Commission.

Read that again. More than 6 in 10 people approaching retirement still owe on their home. This isn't a rare misfortune. It's the new normal — and it's avoidable.

It doesn't have to be that way.

I've watched families go from that stress to something completely different — a clear plan, a loan structured around their actual life, a real path to being mortgage-free years sooner than they thought possible. I've watched the worry leave people's faces. I've seen couples realise, for the first time, that freedom isn't a someday dream. It's a decision, and a plan, away.

That's the work. And somewhere along the way, the reviews stopped feeling like meetings. They became catch-ups. Family checking in on family. Setting aside backup or emergency funds can be one of the best ways to feel financially secure. But where do you even start, especially when finances may already be tight?

Here are some tips on how to start an emergency fund:

✔️ Set up an automatic payment that transfers into a savings or transactional mortgage account.
✔️ Start small and get used to putting aside that amount. Every little bit helps.
✔️ Test your willpower by giving up coffee, alcohol, or takeaways for a week and see how much you save.
✔️ If you’re struggling to leave your savings account alone (and you don’t genuinely need to spend it), ask your NZHL Mortgage Mentor for help – there are options to limit your ability to access your savings.

Hopefully, you'll never need to use your emergency fund. But at least you'll have peace of mind that you have money set aside for a rainy day!
