In this wide-ranging conversation, Brent King, Managing Director of General Finance, discusses the changing landscape of New Zealand’s financial sector and shares insights into how General Finance operates as a specialist finance provider.

The discussion covers the Depositor Compensation Scheme, deposit rates, short-term mortgages and bridging finance, KiwiSaver, entrepreneurship, investment in New Zealand businesses, and the wider outlook for the New Zealand economy.

What does it really mean to be a bank—and could changing the definition create greater competition in New Zealand’s financial sector?

General Capital Managing Director Brent King joined Sharesies’ Shared Lunch alongside SBS Bank Group CEO Mark McLean and University of Auckland Lecturer in Economics Dr Chanelle Duley to discuss:

• Whether the proposed changes could help smaller financial institutions compete with the ā€œbig fourā€ banks
• What the new $100,000 Depositor Compensation Scheme means for depositors
• How increased competition could lead to more attractive deposit rates
• Whether smaller, more agile financial institutions carry greater—or potentially lower—risk
• The growing influence of neobanks and cybersecurity threats on where New Zealanders place their savings

Great news for the General Capital Group and New Zealand's financial sector.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand's decision to allow licensed deposit takers to use the word "bank" under the new regulatory framework is a significant development for the industry.

The change supports greater competition and creates opportunities that could bring additional benefits to General Finance and its customers in the future.
We welcome initiatives that strengthen confidence, transparency, and choice for New Zealand investors.
