πŸš— Big change for UK business mileage claims πŸ‘€

HMRC has increased the simplified approved mileage allowance for cars and vans from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles (when using your personal vehicle) β€” the first increase in over a decade.
The 25p rate after 10,000 miles remains unchanged, as does motorcycle mileage.

Although released in the last week, HMRC are backdating to the start of the 26-27 tax year.

With fuel, insurance, servicing, and general running costs continuing to rise, this update will be welcome news for employees, contractors, and business owners across the UK.

It’s also a reminder for businesses to:
βœ… Review mileage reimbursement policies
βœ… Update payroll and expense systems
βœ… Ensure employees are claiming the correct rates
βœ… Back date your claims if you have claimed already!

For anyone regularly travelling for work, that extra 10p per mile could make a noticeable difference over the course of the year.

And if you drive 10000 miles or over, that is an extra Β£1000 in your pocket.

Happy motoring!

Today is the Woman Who Awards ceremony!

I am a finalist again this year, which I am super proud of. My business has come a long way in the last year and entering for awards is a great way to reflect on the past year.

I am looking forward to seeing if I happen to be a winner this year 🀞

Good luck to everyone in the room, you are all winners!

I always block out the last 2 weeks before the VAT return due date for the quarters of JFM/AMJ/JAS/OND

Why?

Because pretty much all my clients have VAT returns due in same quarter!

So, it is a busy time for me, and I still have 4 to send off! I've got this πŸ‘Š

Making Tax Digital is coming in 14 days!!

That means from April, if you earnt over Β£50000 in 24-25* you will be required to submit quarterly reports to HMRC.

I am making it my mission to inform the sole traders and landlords out there so they can get prepared!

You will need to mandate your bookkeeping, and I suggest you use software as it will make the submission process much easier for you. But, you can still use spreadsheets if you want to.

If you don't have software set up yet, I recommend Xero. And if you use my link, you will get a hefty discount

Or, if you have a bank account with Mettle/Natwest/Ulster/RBS, set up a free FreeAgent account.

Please do not panic! Reach out if you need help! But please do something about it, 14 super close now!

*Income from trading goods/services and/or property only.

I am super proud to be nominatied, again, for the Woman Who Achieves Award 2026: Celebrating Excellence in Business.

Self-nomination is all about reflection. Last year was the first time I entered awards. I entered 3 awards, and was a finalist 3 times too.

This is my second year entering the WWA awards, and a lot has happened in the last year.

- Business has continued to grow. Although I only have a few, I work with amazing clients who have grasped remote bookkeeping with ease and resilience.
- I have incorporated AI into my practice making workflows easier and quicker, which has allowed me to grow.
- I have been recognised across my industry being part of the LUCA awards as a finalist, and asked to host a Bookkeepers Discovery Day with the CEO Ami Copeland.
- I completed my Level 4 self-assessment exam! Super proud.
- Off the back of the LUCAs and completing my exams with Ideal Schools, I was highlighted for a student spotlight.
- My team has grown. I now outsource some admin, bookkeeping, payroll and corporate tax so I can offer all services in one place. Working closely with other professionals has also increased my knowledge.
- I have received some great testimonials.
- As business has grown, my turnover has doubled.
- I am aiming to complete my new offering by April. A coaching service for small business owners doing their own books.
- I started healing the planet! I plant trees on behalf of my clients and donate to The Ocean Cleanup.

So yea, a lot has happened, and why shouldn't I shout about it! I have worked hard to get here.

Wish me luck to hopefully be a finalist again!

Do you know what MTD is?

The Government is digitalising the tax system.

If you have earned over Β£50000 turnover from trading goods/services in 24-25, you will be required to start submitting quarterly updates to HMRC starting April 2026.

- You do have to mandate your bookkeeping
- You do have to digitalise your receipts
- You do have to send a report every quarter (4 reports per year)
- You do have 4-5 weeks to prepare and send that report
- You do have to submit a final return by the following 31 Jan (final submission)
- This is only applicable to trading income

- You do not have to pay anything with your quarterly submissions
- If your turnover including other income streams is over Β£50000, but the trading income portion is under Β£50000, you do not need to do MTD yet

- The only time you will pay is if you have a payment on account (31 Jan & 31 Jul), and if you have further tax to pay once your final submission is completed (by 31 Jan)

- Your final submission (the 5th one) will include any other income streams e.g. PAYE/ Dividends

If your still stuck, please reach out!
