Red flag 🚩

I had an odd email last week.

It was for bookkeeping for personal finances, but it was worded strangely.

Not - I need help with my tax return, but ‘I’d be glad to discuss the project in more detail, including the scope of work, expectations, and any other relevant requirements’
I had already thought they seemed odd at this stage!

And then they sent me a zoom link rather than booking in my calendar.

I thought anything off, and I’m not proceeding.

Today was the meeting - the link took me to a website and asked me to install zoom via Microsoft store - but it looked and seemed off.

So I didn’t proceed. Instead I sent them 3 other meeting links, which they refused to join.

Definite red flag!

So I politely told them ‘I am closing this line of enquiry’

So keep an eye out for this scam - preceeded by TRIMANA.org

Ok, so about a year ago, I mentioned I was working on something new and it was 'coming soon'.

Well, it took me longer than expected!

Who am I?

Hey, I’m Gemma and I run my own business - Gemma Williams Bookkeeping Solutions, or GWBS for short.

I thought I would introduce myself as I’ve not really done that before, and I am more than just a business owner.

I am a mum of 2 girls, wife and pet lover - we have a dog and 2 cats.

I grew up in Stratford upon Avon in the 80s/90s - my happy place is the Welcome Hills which was my stomping ground as a child.
I fed the horses, made dens, saw a ghost 👻, had copious bike rides and gathered conkers.
Being a kid just isn’t the same any more! My eldest is too scared to knock on her friends front door to hang out (she’s 14!).

I now live in Warwick.

I have had a colourful career!

Retail manager
Events coordinator
Driving instructor
Driving examiner
Before eventually becoming a bookkeeper.

I don’t like to take life too seriously - I may be in my 40s, but I feel in my 20s!
I am seen as the fun parent, I act silly when I’m in a good mood and make my children laugh.
I use humour to make light of situations.

I love driving, LOVE driving! And I like a mean looking car with oumph! Though I don’t drive as much these days.
My favourite car I owned was my beloved Scirocco (I cried when I gave it up for a ‘family car’. My current car is pretty fun though - an Octavia VRS!

My favourite holiday destination is Devon!

Other things about me -
I like computer games, gardening, puzzles, reading, fantasy tv/film and all things magic and monsters, marvel movies and walks.
I have 7 tattoos and 4 piercings,
I used to play on an all girls counter strike team and we competed in world championships,
I played world of Warcraft like it was a second job,
I watch paranormal videos,
I help out with our local Scouts,
I like feeding the ducks,
I love a garden centre!

And I now have multiple jobs within my business!

What’s a hoover got to do with a bookkeeper?

You get what you pay for!

Pay crap money, you get crap results!

Pay decent money, and all those pet hairs are finally out of your carpet, and all your financial woes and mistakes are sorted and you have financial clarity.

Thank you - the pet hair was picked up so easy! I am very happy!!

Who else is at a time of their life where they get excited about a hoover!

It’s my business birthday again!

It is now 3 years old, and I can’t believe how much it and I have grown in that time.

If you’re thinking of working for yourself, and you love numbers and puzzles, bookkeeping is a fantastic career option.

I love my job!

Ok so we’re in September - have you done your tax return yet?

Have you completed your accounts for last year?

Have you even thought about it at all??

Most people leave it to the last minute and that’s super stressful for you, and for me!

If you want your return filed by a qualified professional, give me a shout. However, my deadline for receiving your information is 30 November.

And please don’t do this if you’re thinking of doing it yourself…

I was once told ‘I just took my bank statement and took all the money out from the money in’

They mixed business and personal 😱

So any funds she introduced was income. And and drawings or personal spends and loan repayments, were expenses!!

They didn’t make use of any tax savings, and didn’t include their business credit cards.

Their tax return was completely incorrect!

Imagine you have done something similar, and down the line get inspected. That will be a huge blow to you financially.

So please, if you don’t know what you are doing, let me do it for you!

The biggest lesson I could give you when running your own business?

Don’t mix personal with business.

It gets messy.

Many times I have taken hours tidying up and sorting books because items have been coded incorrectly as a business expense, when it is personal, or a drawing.

It doesn’t just affect your businesses numbers, but it also affects your tax! You take those numbers at face value and put them in your tax return, usually resulting in an underpayment of tax.

And then you pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed, and find out you need to find an extra £x in tax to pay.

It’s messy.

Don’t do it.
