726 years of Topsham and the town is still going strong 💪

Topsham has just celebrated another awesome Charter Day 🎉

Back in 1300, King Edward I granted Topsham a Royal Charter, giving the town the right to hold a weekly Saturday market and an annual fair!

More than seven centuries later, the tradition lives on!

Fore Street was buzzing!

For us, we love to see Topsham doing what it does particularly well: bringing locals, businesses and visitors together. And it’s an excuse to party!

We’re proud to be based in a town with such a strong sense of identity, history and community.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who helped make another Charter Day happen.

Seven years is a long time until it isn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️.

You may have heard of the seven-year rule when it comes to gifting and Inheritance Tax. But there’s one part of the rule that’s easy to overlook.

💡 You need to have seven years.

That means that if you are thinking about gifting in your 80s, you will need to survive a further seven years for it to fall outside your estate for Inheritance Tax. There are exemptions and other rules to consider, so it is not quite as simple as giving money away and starting the clock..but it’s broadly the rule.

The main message is, the earlier you start thinking about what you want to pass on, the more options you may have.

Back in 2023 we launched The Elephant in the Room workshops.

Getting older is a fact of life. So too is that we don’t know what’s around the corner. In over 20 years of helping people plan their finances, we’ve learned that very few of us are comfortable talking to loved ones about the challenges of later life. Yes, it’s the elephant in the room.

That’s why we created the Elephant in the Room lunchtime workshops to break the taboo around talking about later life planning. We actually went on to win an award for our campaign too.

Our advisers spend time with your group, organisation or business discussing the ‘uncomfortable’ openly, touching on the pitfalls around not being ready for the difficult times.

Those with older parents have found our sessions extremely helpful as we highlight urgent actions that we all need to take to ensure the smoothest of times, in the most difficult times.

With new tax rules coming in in April 2027, this could be the difference between leaving a meaningful and tax-efficient legacy for your loved ones, or HMRC becoming the main beneficiary of your estate.

Who needs Wimbledon when we have fantastic tennis on our doorstep in , and all for a good cause.

In June, we were delighted to support this year’s Women’s Doubles Charity Cup at Exeter Golf and Country Club with Wear Park Spa and Restaurant.

It was a buzzy day of tennis and community, all while raising money for the Elena Baltacha Foundation.

The charity does incredible work creating opportunities for children from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them discover tennis and supporting them with coaching, confidence and opportunities that can have a lasting impact on their lives.

It’s always heartwarming to see local people coming together for such a worthwhile cause, and we’re proud to have played a small part in this event.
To a vibrant British summer of sport! (and we haven’t mentioned the football...yet!)

What a lovely evening! Our 5 0’Clock Club ventured up the road to Topsham’s Cricket Club this time and it was fab! There was a very interesting and vibrant crowd of local business owners and entrepreneurs along with a scrumptious spread from The Globe Hotel. The weather eventually picked up, and the cricket was a joy in the background. A success!

Huge thanks to everyone involved and all those who ventured out in the drizzle and made a few new connections by the end of the night.
