Since 1995 Sutton McGrath Hartley have been a Chartered Accountancy firm based in Sheffield and Chesterfield. In 2018 the firm began an exciting growth period, first acquiring BullockWoodburn followed by Haywood & Co, Andertons Liversidge, Jolliffe Cork, Malcolm J Harris, BCL Accountants, D’Arcy Howard & Co, Howard Matthews, Sheards and Reed Smith. Now, with over 150 staff across 9 offices and additional services being offered within the group, it has become clear that for the clients of each office to benefit, everything should be tied together with a new SMH branding. In 2022, the SMH Group was born, with all the individual offices having their original names prefixed with ‘SMH’. The change allows us to give each office access to the wider group’s services, whilst keeping the local knowledge and expertise in each area. The rebrand was the vision of James Hartley in a bid to make sure there is a clear path and structure for existing and new group entities. The mission of the newly formed SMH Group is to ‘ensure no financial stone is left unturned’ to enable clients to access all their financial requirements within one group of companies.

On 17th October, the team at SMH Howard Matthews will be taking part in the Saint Michael's Hospice Moonlight Glow Walk, raising money for an organisation that plays such an important role in our local community.

Saint Michael’s Hospice provides compassionate, personalised care for people affected by terminal illness across the Harrogate district, supporting individuals and families when they need it most.

A major investment in Sheffield’s sporting future.

puckstop.com and Sheffield Steelers have joined forces through Steel City Property Holdings to acquire the 101,337 sq ft Technology Building on Terry Street, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.

The move will give Puck Stop additional retail and warehousing space, including plans for one of Europe’s largest Bauer Hockey mono-brand stores, while Sheffield Steelers will gain additional space to expand its merchandise manufacturing and retail operations.

We’re proud that SMH Group has played a part in bringing the transaction together, and that the deal demonstrates our one firm approach in action.

With both businesses already working with our accountancy team, Mark Bardwell advised on tax and introduced the opportunity to James Furniss, Head of Commercial Finance, who supported the funding requirements and worked closely with Lloyds Bank to structure a funding package around the ambitions of both businesses.

By bringing together expertise from different parts of SMH Group, we were able to provide joined-up support through a significant transaction with a number of moving parts.

MD Law acted on the property acquisition, alongside the wider professional team involved in getting the deal completed.

As Mark Bardwell said:

“It is a significant investment for both businesses and a great example of ambitious local business owners continuing to invest in Sheffield and the wider region.”

A fantastic next step for two well-known Sheffield businesses, and a great example of our one firm approach supporting ambitious clients through significant opportunities.

It’s a huge figure, and a reminder that payroll is about far more than producing payslips.
