🏡 Could your home help fund your retirement?
If you’re over 55 and own a property, you may have heard of equity release as a way to access some of the money tied up in your home.
But before you consider it, there are a few important things to understand:
1️⃣ How much could you release?
The amount available depends on factors such as your age, property value and the type of plan you choose.
2️⃣ How will it affect your estate?
Releasing equity can reduce the value of the inheritance you leave behind, particularly if interest is rolled up over time.
3️⃣ What about your existing mortgage?
If you still have a mortgage, this will usually need to be considered as part of the process. It doesn’t necessarily mean equity release is off the table.
4️⃣ Do you have to roll up the interest?
Not necessarily. Some later-life lending options allow you to make voluntary payments towards the interest or capital, potentially helping to manage the amount owed.
5️⃣ Is equity release the right option for you?
It isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on your circumstances, alternatives such as downsizing, a retirement interest-only mortgage or another form of later-life lending could be worth considering.
💡 The important thing is to understand your options before making a decision.
If you’re considering using the equity in your home to support your retirement, speak to a qualified adviser who can look at your individual circumstances and explain the options available to you.
