🔥 How can realistic fire drills strengthen preparedness on board vehicle-carrying vessels?

The Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum (VCSF) has published new Fire Drill Guidelines for Vehicle Carrying Vessels, providing a structured framework for developing and conducting realistic, scenario-based fire drills.

Covering scenarios both at sea and in port, the guidelines focus on operational readiness, decision-making and coordination, while highlighting the importance of effective ship–shore coordination, specialist firefighting support, salvage, and port of refuge planning.

Latest Insights | US Tariffs & Trade 📢 USTR's Request for Comments on Proposed Extension of Suspension of Port Fees to 9 January 2027

Further to previous reports of an agreed extension of the suspension of port service fees between the United States and China, on 26 October 2026 the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) published a Request for Comments from interested parties on what the USTR has now described as a “proposal” to extend the extension through January 9, 2027.

One month on from our first NorthStandard event in Spain, we’re reflecting on an exceptional day of conversations, connections and collaboration in Madrid.

We were delighted to welcome a high-calibre audience of leading shipowners, brokers, charterers, operators and maritime professionals, creating an outstanding forum to exchange views, share expertise and explore the emerging risks shaping our industry within a unique format.

The quality of the audience was matched by the quality of the conversation. The level of engagement throughout the event was truly exceptional, with insightful questions and lively discussion from our guests helping to make the sessions both relevant and thought-provoking.

Most importantly, the welcome from the Spanish maritime community has exceeded our best expectations. The openness, interest and enthusiasm shown towards NorthStandard have reinforced our confidence in the opportunities ahead and our commitment to building long-term relationships in Spain and across the wider Mediterranean.

This event was much more than a gathering. It was an opportunity to listen to the market, understand our Members’ and partners’ priorities, share our expertise and strengthen the relationships that underpin everything we do.

Since issuing our initial alert on 7 October, NorthStandard has received a further report of a container fire involving UN 3378 Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate (Sodium Percarbonate) under similar circumstances.

This latest incident reinforces our advice for Members to exercise extreme caution when accepting bookings for this cargo, particularly from Qingdao and Lianyungang, and to maintain increased vigilance where it is already onboard.

Members should review the applicable SDS, stowage and segregation arrangements and onboard response measures, and contact NorthStandard for further guidance.

After an inspiring week of learning, collaboration and networking, our 2026 UK Residential Training Course has come to a close.

Bringing together delegates, presenters and industry professionals from across the maritime sector, the course provided a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, explore real-world challenges and build lasting professional connections.

Thank you to everyone who took part, particularly our delegates for their energy and enthusiasm throughout the week, and to the presenters, organisers and colleagues whose support helped make this year's programme such a success.

We are proud to support the development of the next generation of maritime professionals and to play a part in bringing together talented individuals from across the industry to learn from one another.

As our 2026 UK Residential Training Course draws to a close, the final two days have provided a fitting end to a fantastic week of learning, discussion and networking.

Yesterday, delegates visited South Shields Marine School, where they experienced vessel navigation first hand using the college's ship simulator. The day also featured interactive workshops focussing on collision (Capt Stephen Sayer and Capt Michelle Cooper) and pollution claims (Capt Sachin Shanbhag, Aidan Bates-Porter and Capt Jayashanker Kizhakkedath). The evening then saw the much acclaimed “Elizabethan Banquet” take the delegates back in time for some great entertainment!

Today's programme brings the course to a close with sessions on how our Loss Prevention team supports Members (Capt Rod Maclennan) and the increasing importance decarbonisation plays in the maritime industry (Mark Smith). We are also pleased to have heard from UK Interim SOSREP, Lisa Tuckwell. Lisa joined this year's course as a delegate and was a panel speaker this morning, sharing her experience of the role of the SOSREP in UK maritime emergencies.

Wednesday 7 October at our 2026 UK Residential Training Course was packed with learning and networking opportunities.

Delegates heard from Holly Conway, Peter Telford and Abbie Benge on people liabilities - covering personal injury and illness, stowaways, diversions and people claims, before taking part in interactive workshop sessions.

The afternoon saw the group visit Beamish Museum to explore the history of the North East, before coming together for an evening dinner and entertainment, providing further opportunities to connect, share experiences and build valuable industry relationships.
