As Jun Wei's internship with NorthStandard comes to a close this week, we caught up with him to reflect on an unforgettable journey through the Singapore Maritime Foundation's MPA Global Internship Award (GIA) programme.
Over the past few months, Jun Wei has gained hands-on experience across multiple areas of the business, from Claims and Underwriting to Loss Prevention, developing a deeper understanding of the role P&I Clubs play in supporting the maritime industry.
A highlight of his internship was spending four weeks at our Headquarters in Newcastle. There, he had the opportunity to work alongside colleagues, attend training sessions and client meetings, and gain exposure to live claims and operations. Beyond the workplace, he embraced the local culture through team lunches, Quayside runs, Summer Fest, and experiencing life in a new city for the first time.
Reflecting on the experience, Jun Wei shared that living and working overseas challenged him to become more adaptable, open-minded and confident. It also reinforced his ambition to pursue international opportunities in the future and deepen his understanding of the global maritime industry.
Looking ahead, Jun Wei will be embarking on an exchange programme at Shanghai Maritime University before continuing to explore opportunities within the maritime sector.
His biggest takeaway?
"Stay open-minded and be willing to try. Some of my most rewarding experiences came from stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing something new."
Thank you, Jun Wei, for being part of the NorthStandard team. We wish you every success in the next chapter of your journey.
