GBP/EUR = 19-month high (highest in 575 days)
GBP/USD = 6-week high (highest in 44 days)
Key market developments:
- As the dust settles following the Budget, markets appear to have responded positively to the Chancellor's approach. Sterling has strengthened against both the EUR and USD. Rather than introducing fresh tax increases, the Chancellor opted to utilise some fiscal headroom, a move that has been viewed favourably by investors.
- GBP/EUR has recorded its strongest monthly gain since 2023. However, market indicators suggest Sterling is now heavily overbought, with these conditions persisting for their longest period since 2004.
- Christine Lagarde has confirmed she will step down as President of the European Central Bank in February, earlier than previously expected, creating additional uncertainty around the future direction of Eurozone monetary policy.
- GBP/USD also moved higher after comments from Fed Chair Warsh, who declined to commit to a December interest rate hike. However, markets are still pricing in approximately two US rate hikes by March 2027, which is helping to limit broader US dollar weakness.
If you have EUR or USD requirements coming up, now may be a good opportunity to take advantage of the stronger Pound.
