Fresh data reveals retail investors’ stock holdings just hit a record high

According to JPMorgan, the percentage of US households’ financial assets devoted to stocks hit 41% in April – the highest level in history.

Retail investors have also increasingly been trading using leverage. In fact, recent data showed that the amount of money they’ve borrowed from brokers to buy into markets hit its own record high last month.

Alternative securities markets on the march 👏

The TISE - The International Stock Exchange saw record Q1 listings with 225 newly listed securities during the first three months of 2021, which is more than any other first quarter since the inception of the Exchange in 1998. It took the total number of listed securities on TISE up by more than 2.3% from the end of December 2020 to 3,235 at 31 March 2021.

JP Jenkins provide a similar service but without the need to go public, an opportunity to list shares, bonds, warrants and convertible loan notes at minimal cost. We have seen great interest in our new trading platform Direct – which has in turn has a number of new admissions in Q1. Additionally, with the aspect of cross border listings we now expect more internationally domiciled companies to be admitted to the platform in the coming months.

The Bank of England (BoE) and the Treasury launched a taskforce last week to look into a potential digital currency for Britain, nicknamed “Britcoin”.

The launch comes at a time when many central banks around the world are growing increasingly concerned at the breakneck speed at which cryptocurrencies are growing and being embraced by institutions.

Britcoin is in very early stages and no actual decision has been made on whether to introduce the CBDC in the UK. But CBDCs have been on the BoE’s radar for a while. It’s been the topic of several speeches and also a discussion paper published last year.

Britcoin (and other CBDCs) also make a central bank’s life far easier. For example, rather than quantitative easing (printing money to buy government bonds), central banks could simply credit emergency funds to every individual directly, notes Tatibouet.
