Imperfect credit rarely kills a buy-to-let application. What kills them is the DIY approach that follows the first decline.

Missed payments, defaults, CCJs, even debt management plans and IVAs: lenders exist who will consider all of them, because each one has its own rules and its own appetite for risk, and what's a hard no at one is a shrug at another. As our own website puts it when asked if bad credit rules you out, "it depends how imperfect!"

The genuinely damaging move is applying lender by lender on hope, because every unsuccessful application leaves a mark on your credit file that the next lender sees, so each decline makes the following one likelier. The right order is the reverse: be upfront about the history, get your credit report first, then apply once, to the lender already matched to your situation.
