Has your bookkeeping currently got you feeling like Bertie here? 💤

That’s exactly what I’m here to help with!

Now based in Brighton, I specialise in working with small to medium businesses across Sussex to keep their bookkeeping organised, up to date, and far less stressful - whether that’s staying on top of invoices, managing cash flow, preparing for VAT returns, or simply getting your numbers working better for you.

Don't hesitate to drop me a message ☺️

One of the biggest issues I’m still seeing across small businesses right now isn’t sales, it’s when those sales actually get paid…

And that gap is becoming harder for SMEs to ignore.

Late payments continue to be a recurring theme in UK business news and policy discussions, and for good reason. Even businesses with strong sales can find themselves under pressure if cash isn’t actually landing in the bank when expected.

The challenge is that it often creeps in gradually - a few invoices paid a week late here, a couple of overdue ones there - until it starts to affect day-to-day cash flow decisions.

This is where bookkeeping becomes more than just record-keeping. Up-to-date books make it much easier to see patterns early, spot overdue invoices quickly, and understand exactly where your cash position really stands.

It also gives you the visibility to act sooner - whether that’s chasing payments, adjusting expectations with suppliers, or planning ahead with more confidence.

If cash flow feels tighter than your sales suggest, it’s often worth looking at when you’re getting paid, not just how much you’re earning. Feel free to drop me a message, I'm here to help!

While the headline inflation rate may be more stable than it has been in recent years, what I’m also seeing is that businesses are becoming much more aware of their costs, more intentional with spending, and more focused on understanding their margins properly.

Supplier prices, utilities, wages, and software costs all add up, but this is also creating a really positive shift - more business owners are taking a closer look at where their money is going and making more informed decisions as a result.

That’s why May and June can be such a valuable point in the year for a financial reset. We’re far enough into the tax year to start seeing patterns, but still early enough to refine things and get back on track if needed.

A simple budget or cash flow review at this stage can highlight opportunities as well as costs - whether that’s improving pricing, spotting inefficiencies, or just gaining a clearer picture of performance.

It’s all about clarity, and clarity leads to better decisions and stronger businesses in the long run.

If you haven’t taken a close look at your numbers since the start of the tax year, now is a great time to do it.

We’re a few weeks into Making Tax Digital for Income Tax now being live, and I’ve been really interested to see how different businesses are adapting.

What I’m noticing most is that the transition isn’t really about the software itself - it’s about routine. Once businesses settle into a rhythm of keeping things updated more regularly, the whole process starts to feel much more manageable.

Of course, there are still a few early challenges (which is completely expected with a change this big), but most people seem to be finding their feet with a bit of time and support.

I’d be really interested to hear how others are finding it so far - smooth sailing, or still a work in progress?
