It started with one nursery, and one overwhelmed owner.

In 2022, we visited a client caring for 19 children with SEND in a 38 place setting, when a letter arrived asking them to take another. The staff were exhausted. We gave support, and we stayed to listen.

That visit stayed with us. It was clear this wasn't one nursery struggling alone, it was a pattern. So we set out to understand it properly.

Our sector wide survey found that 40 percent of nurseries have lost staff directly because of the stress of managing SEND without enough support, alongside real gaps in funding, training and recruitment.

That's why dot2dot Specialist Day Nursery Insurance Provider is now funding a three year PhD into SEND in nurseries, led by Sunina Kiran and supervised by Professor Christian Harrison at the University of Greater Manchester in Bolton. The goal is a practical roadmap for change, so every child gets consistent, inclusive support, wherever they live.

dot2dot Specialist Day Nursery Insurance Provider is proud to be funding a three year PhD into Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in nurseries, led by Sunina Kiran and supervised by Professor Christian Harrison at the University of Greater Manchester in Bolton. Sunina is working directly with nursery owners, SEND coordinators, teachers and families to understand why support differs so widely across the country.

The response has told us how much this matters. When the PhD was announced, we received 50 expressions of interest within two weeks, and the study has been described as being of national importance.

The aim is a practical roadmap for change, helping nurseries, families and children get consistent, inclusive SEND support.
