Happy Halloween from your neighbours at Westland!

Tomorrow is all about costumes, candy, and community, and we love seeing neighbourhoods come together. Before heading out, here are a few quick reminders to keep the night safe:

- Bring a flashlight or add reflective tape to costumes
- Keep your porch and walkway well lit and clear
- Use LED candles in pumpkins instead of real flames

Stay safe out there, and have fun! From all of us at Westland Insurance.

Who passed on your love of soccer? ⚽

For John Papanayotou, CIP, Senior Insurance Advisor, it was his parents.

“It feels like they were there from the moment I learned how to run.”

They never missed a match, and his mom kept showing up right through his senior soccer years. Over the years, John scored some big goals: a championship winner while his team was down a player, a late equalizer in a playoff final, and a last-minute semifinal winner.

But the lesson that stuck came from the stands:

“Just being there for someone during important moments in their life is very impactful. You always remember who was right there at ground zero.”

John also has a personal connection to the NSL: his friend’s daughter, Julia Benati of Halifax Tides FC, scored a stoppage-time winner from near the halfway line this season. 🔥

As the semi-finals kick off this weekend, we’re proud to celebrate the people who pass on the game. 💛

Who passed on your love of soccer? ⚽

For Blake, son of Westland Account Executive Leah Hamel, it was someone unexpected: his Grade 6 school buddy.

Two years ago, Blake started at a new school during a hard time for his family, just days after losing his grandpa. His buddy invited him to play soccer at recess every day.

“What may have seemed like a small gesture meant everything to Blake,” Leah says.

That invitation sparked a passion. Today, Blake plays fall, indoor, and summer soccer, and even moved up to play with kids two years older this season. Rain or shine, he wants to be on the field.

“What started as a game at recess became something that helped him heal.”

As the Northern Super League heads into the playoffs, we’re proud to celebrate the people who pass on the game, sometimes with one small act of kindness. 💛

Who passed on your love of soccer? ⚽

For Cameron Pytyck, it was Sav, the coach who first organized his Timbits games and later led his U12 team to an Ontario Cup title.

“He showed me that soccer is not just a game where you kick a ball around, but an opportunity to build lifelong relationships with your teammates.”

The story came full circle in 2015, when Cameron and his younger brother both scored in the regional final that sent their high school to OFSAA for the first time in decades. The last time the school won? The year Sav was a senior there.

Today, Cameron coaches with the Queen’s University women’s soccer team, where he helped develop goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan, now playing in the NSL. Read the full story: https://www.westlandinsurance.ca/news/love-of-soccer-cameron-pytyck/

In the last week of Cyber Security Awareness Month, Cam Baker shares how to build your cyber security “bench” before you need it. He also has simple ways to help your team, and even your family, stay safer online. One easy tip: forward scam texts to 7726 so phone carriers can block them.

54 volunteers. 357 hours. 5 communities.

This year, Westland teams across Canada rolled up their sleeves with Habitat for Humanity, framing walls, building decks, and stocking ReStore shelves to help more families find a place to call home.

A huge thank you to the Wubs Family Foundation, whose $50,000 donation made these engagement days possible, and to every employee who showed up to help.

🍂 Here's a look at what our Alberta teams have been up to in the community this September!

🏆 Our Grande Prairie team joined other local businesses for a week of friendly competition during the annual Corporate Challenge. They showed up in costumes and with team spirit for Trivia night, co****le, and the Amazing Race. The team finished fourth overall and took first place in the co****le showdown. Funds raised went towards local charity organizations.

🤝 Our Lloydminster team had a booth at the Heavy Oil tradeshow, where they met attendees and handed out promotional items. It was a great chance to connect with the local business community.

⛳ We were proud to take part in the 4th Annual Fort Edmonton Foundation Golf Classic in September. Our team supported the booth and gave away promotional items throughout the day.

🎈 Valleyview joined Alberta Days on August 28, an Alberta-wide initiative. The town and other local groups supported the event with games, face painting and a BBQ, and our branch hosted a raffle.

🥫 Our Edmonton team volunteered at Edmonton's Food Bank. We also supported the cause with a $2,500 donation to help neighbours in need.

🏃 On September 12, 2026, Westland Insurance was a proud national sponsor of the Cassie + Friends Society community run in Edmonton. For the fourth year in a row, our Edmonton team laced up to run, walk, and show up for kids living with juvenile arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. Westland has supported Cassie + Friends since 2009 and has been a national partner since 2022.

🏁 Together with 173 participants, $31,410 was raised for kids and families affected by juvenile arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. These funds go directly to vital programs, fuel important research, and help raise awareness.

💚 The event brings together patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and supporters. It's also a place where families facing similar challenges can connect, share their stories, and feel less alone. Learn more on our blog: https://ow.ly/bViB50ZU7Hn
