“Debt can feel overwhelming — but it isn’t forever.

There are always options: from debt consolidation, restructuring, bankruptcy, or a consumer proposal. Licensed Insolvency Trustees (LITs) also stop harassment from creditors by filing a formal insolvency.

And if you don’t need a formal filing, we’ll still help by suggesting plans to pay down debt, cut expenses, or renegotiate with creditors. The key is remembering: you always have options.”

- Denyse, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
Denyse has helped thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians find relief from overwhelming debt. For her, the most important part of the job is showing people that there’s always a way forward — even when the situation feels hopeless.

Reaching out to a LIT is a safe, practical first step. We’re real people who have been helping the people of our province get out of debt for over 40 years — no call centres, and no pressure. Whether virtually or in person, at one of our four local offices, your consultation is always free and confidential.

“How does insolvency affect your family?

You’ll keep your personal effects and household assets — and in virtually all cases, critical ones like your home and car. Insolvency isn’t designed to make you start from nothing; it’s meant to protect your family from the burden of long-term, unmanaged debt.

It’s one of the hardest questions people face.

Also, unless your spouse has co-signed on a debt, they’re not responsible for repaying it.

In fact, it’s not uncommon for one spouse to file a formal insolvency while the other does not.

- Becky, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
Becky has seen firsthand how worried families can be when they are facing unmanageable debt. Guiding people to understand that bankruptcy and consumer proposals are tools to protect families — not punish them — is one of the most rewarding parts of her role.

“Will anyone know if I’ve filed for bankruptcy or a consumer proposal?

It’s one of the biggest fears people have — but the reality is, in most cases, no one will know besides your Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) and your creditors. LITs are legally bound to keep your information confidential, and unless disclosure is required by law, your situation stays private.

While there is a public insolvency registry, it requires a paid search — meaning it’s very unlikely that friends or family will ever see it.”

- Michalle, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
Michalle often reassures clients that confidentiality is at the heart of what we do. Helping people move forward without fear of judgment or exposure is one of the most important aspects of her role.

“Should you use your retirement savings to pay down debt?

It might seem like the easiest solution — but in most cases, it’s not the best idea. Registered retirement savings plans and pensions are protected in Canada if you file for bankruptcy or a consumer proposal. That means your retirement funds can’t be seized by creditors.

Withdrawing funds too early can also create a tax bill and leave you short for retirement. The only time it may make sense is if the debt is small, can be cleared in one payment, and won’t impact your long-term savings goals. Before making a decision, talk to a Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) about your options.”

- Claire, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
Claire often meets people who feel tempted to dip into their retirement savings to cover debt — only to realize later that they’ve created more problems than they solved. Helping clients protect their future while tackling today’s financial challenges is one of the most rewarding parts of her work.

“How do you rebuild credit after bankruptcy or a consumer proposal?

The good news: the impact is short-term. Bankruptcy typically falls off your credit report seven years after discharge, and consumer proposals will remain on your credit report for up to six years from filing.

Continuing to make payments on secured debts like your mortgage or car loan is an effective way to rebuild credit during the process. Plus, there are other steps you can take immediately after filing to start improving your score — and we’ll walk you through them.”

- Ian, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
Ian has guided countless people through insolvency and knows that life after bankruptcy or a consumer proposal is about rebuilding. He takes pride in helping debtors not just get out of debt, but also regain their confidence and take back control of their financial future.

“A Bankruptcy or Consumer Proposal Isn’t Forever.

Bankruptcy isn’t forever: many are discharged after just nine months, and it only remains on your credit report for seven years.

Consumer proposals usually last around five years, but you can repay them faster with no penalty. It will remain on your credit report for up to six years from filing.

Both options allow you to start rebuilding your credit sooner than most people realize.”

- David, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
David often meets clients who are surprised to learn that bankruptcy and consumer proposals are not lifelong sentences — they’re structured tools to provide relief and help rebuild financial stability. “What’s the feedback we hear most often from clients?

After more than 40 years, some themes always come back:
‘I finally slept for the first time in years, knowing I had a plan.’

‘There was no judgment — just clear support and guidance.’

And perhaps the one we hear most often: ‘I don’t know why I waited so long to get help!’

These words remind us why we do this work — and that no one should face financial struggles alone.”

- Denyse, a valued member of the JNL team.

“Why a Licensed Insolvency Trustee is the right choice

It’s natural to have questions when you’re in financial distress.

Licensed Insolvency Trustees (LITs) are professionals trained specifically to help Canadians through a consumer proposal or bankruptcy.

Most are accountants or lawyers who complete additional years of training and are federally licensed and regulated by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.

That means we’re held to the highest standards of ethics and education. And no matter how overwhelming your situation feels, chances are we’ve seen something similar — and we can help you find a solution.”

- Becky, a valued member of the JNL team.

Team spotlight:
Becky often works with clients who arrive feeling unsure, ashamed, or afraid to trust anyone with their financial story. Helping people understand that LITs are independent, federally licensed, and regulated professionals — and showing them that real solutions are possible — is what drives her every day.
