The Bank of Canada has reduced the overnight lending rate, and as a result, banks will be adjusting the prime rate to 4.45%.

This decision comes at a time when the Canadian economy is showing slower growth, and there is ongoing uncertainty surrounding global trade and tariff negotiations. These tariff pressures have made the economic outlook less predictable, and the Bank of Canada is aiming to maintain stability and relieve financial strain without reigniting inflation.

What this means for homeowners:

If you have a variable rate mortgage or HELOC, your interest cost may decrease.

If your renewal is coming up in the next 12–18 months, this shift improves your planning timeline.

If you're considering restructuring or consolidating, you may now have more flexibility than even a few months ago.
