The clocks go back this Sunday, so starting next week most of us will be driving home in the dark. It's also the busiest time of year for deer on Ontario roads, and they're most active around dawn and dusk.
A few habits that help on the drive home:
🚘Use your high beams on empty rural roads, and scan the shoulders and ditches for eyes reflecting back.
🚘Slow down where you see deer crossing signs. They're posted where collisions happen.
🚘If one deer crosses, expect more behind it.
🚘If a deer steps out, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can put you into oncoming traffic or the ditch.
If you do hit one, pull over somewhere safe, turn on your hazards and stay clear of the animal. Call the police if anyone is hurt or the damage is serious, take photos of your car and the scene, then call your broker. Our in-house claims team will walk you through what comes next.
