— The Three Ps
This week, I had the privilege of speaking with several of our colleagues in underwriting.
My message was simple: in a world that is moving faster every day—and increasingly driven by technology—we can’t forget that, at the heart of every business, we’re still people.
Throughout my career in risk management, whether leading teams or working as part of one, I’ve always come back to what I call the three Ps:
People. Partnerships. Proactivity.
A few thoughts I shared:
Partnerships matter. Whether you own a small business or work within a large corporation, success comes from understanding one another, setting clear expectations and working toward a common win.
When there’s tone, pick up the phone. It’s easy for an email exchange to become tense or for emotion to creep into our words. A quick conversation can often create clarity, rebuild understanding and move everyone forward.
Look for ways to say yes. We may not always be able to deliver exactly what someone is asking for, but we can stay curious, explore alternatives and focus on what is possible.
Finally, create a culture of recognition. We’re often quick to speak up when something goes wrong but slower to acknowledge the people who make a difference.
I’ve challenged my team—and challenged our underwriting partners—to recognize one person outside their immediate team every week. Send them a note. Copy their leader. Let people know their work matters.
A little kindness and appreciation can go a long way toward building stronger teams, stronger partnerships and a better workplace.
For the business owners reading this: if you’re looking for an insurance partner with an underwriting team who will work with you to get things done, we’d welcome the opportunity to earn your business.
We can’t insure every risk, but if you’re a small or medium-sized business owner who needs one stop , more time in your life and a local insurance partner who will be there when it matters, we’d love to chat.
