10 drivers charged with Impaired Operation this weekend in Barrie
Over this past weekend, Barrie Police charged 10 drivers with Impaired Operation. Through dedicated RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks from our Traffic Unit, as well as general patrol by our front-line officers, 10 impaired drivers were taken off the roads this weekend alone.
In one occurrence in the early hours of Saturday, November 22nd, an officer on patrol on Collier Street was flagged down by another driver who alerted the officer to a possible impaired driver. The officer conducted a traffic stop and after speaking with the driver, a 23-year-old Barrie man, arrested him for impaired operation. When his female passenger arrived at BPS headquarters to pick him up, it was determined that she was also wanted on several warrants with other police services and was held in custody.
In another incident just after midnight on Saturday night, a 37-year-old male was observed by a Barrie Police officer driving erratically and cutting across lanes in the Dunlop Street West and Sarjeant Drive area. When the vehicle was stopped by police, he resisted arrest and for officer safety, a conducted energy weapon was used after the male repeatedly reached for his pocket in the struggle. It was confirmed that the male was also prohibited from driving. He is now facing multiple charges including: impaired operation, assault with intent to resist arrest, operation while prohibited, failing to comply with probation, and refusal to comply with demand. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
With the holiday season approaching, Barrie Police are once again reminding the public to plan ahead. Impaired driving, whether it involves alcohol or drugs, is dangerous - not only for drivers and their passengers, but also for everyone else on the roads. There are many other options available, including taxis, public transit and ride sharing. Our officer, including our dedicated Traffic Services Unit are out around the clock, working to keep our roads safe.
