Good News Story

There’s an old saying that bad news travels fast. If you think this is a modern phenomenon driven by the digital age and the poison of social media, think again. The writer Thomas Kyd used a similar phrase in his 1592 play, The Spanish Tragedy. Of course, this literary work is not to be confused with the 1997 rap album Bad Newz Travels Fast by the aptly named DJ Poo. Listen at your peril I’d suggest.

Last weekend, Paul Grant was proud to be part of the Management Rights Made Easy seminar on the Gold Coast, joining a fantastic panel of industry experts to share insights into the management rights sector.

Recently I’ve been ruminating on the stuff we accept in modern society that makes no sense. As an old white bloke, I’m all for tradition but the fact is that some products, rules and activities we mostly take for granted would never get a run if I dreamt them up today. The fact that at one time or another I’ve taken part in some of these follies and survived is either testament to my magnificent resilience or dumb luck writ large. The Managing Director is most assured that it’s the latter and she should know. Having met me 45 years ago she has observed me at peak idiot and also my steady decline to a more risk averse old person.

A Nation of Tribes

There has been much talk lately around social cohesion and a need for us all to share common values and aspirations. This seems fair enough. But it’s also true that our interests, hobbies and obsessions are as diverse as the very country we live in. It is a fundamental part of human nature to want to identify with something and be part of a group that does the same. How else to explain organised religion or political affiliations for example.

As regular readers of this column will know the managing director and I don't mind a bit of travel, preferably of the comfortable variety. As such I write this month's missive from the Matild Palace hotel in Budapest, as one does. The hotel is every bit as pleasant as the name suggests and I find myself ensconced in the breakfast room, looking out over a winter wonderland of historic buildings and snow.
