**Same mortgage. Different life.**

The Saturday Letter went out this morning.

This week's letter is about something many of us overlook.

How much life can change while some of the arrangements we made years ago quietly stay the same.

A little money. A little life. And perhaps a different way of looking at things.

If you're already receiving The Saturday Letter, I hope you enjoy today's read.

And if you're not, there's always room for one more.

You're warmly invited to join us.

There's always something, isn't there?

Something to finish. Something to pay off. Something to get organised.

And we tell ourselves that once it's all sorted, we'll have more time to enjoy life.

But life has a habit of carrying on while we're making those plans.

I'm not suggesting we stop preparing for tomorrow.

Just that we remember to enjoy a little of today.

**A Way of Living — Observation 072**

*Less Finance. More Life.*

Do you remember when an ordinary afternoon was enough?

The sprinkler running. The sun going down. A conversation with someone you love.

Nothing particularly exciting happening.

And yet, looking back, those are often the moments we'd give anything to experience again.

Perhaps we've become so busy chasing an extraordinary life that we've forgotten how beautiful an ordinary one can be.

A little something to think about today.

27/10/2026

Somewhere along the way, ordinary became something we were supposed to escape.

A quiet afternoon. A familiar street. A conversation that goes nowhere in particular.

Nothing remarkable. Nothing to post about. Nothing to prove.

And yet, these are often the moments we remember most fondly.

Perhaps a good life isn't one extraordinary moment after another.

Perhaps it's learning to appreciate the ordinary ones.

**When did ordinary stop being enough?**

Have you ever wondered how much of the way you think about money, work and success came from the home you grew up in?

Not necessarily from anything your parents deliberately taught you.

Sometimes it was simply what you saw. What you heard. What everyone around you considered normal.

And those ideas can stay with us for a lifetime.

Some are worth holding onto. Others might deserve another look.

Perhaps understanding where our beliefs came from is part of deciding how we want to live.

Some of the things we carry through life were never deliberately taught to us.

We simply grew up around them.

The way money was discussed. The things considered important. What success looked like. What was expected of us.

And somewhere along the way, those ideas became our own.

Or at least, we assumed they were.

There's something quite liberating about realising we can appreciate where we've come from without necessarily living by every belief we inherited.

We spend a remarkable amount of time trying to make sure the future will be alright.

And understandably so.

But I've been wondering whether our pursuit of financial security sometimes comes at the expense of enjoying what we already have.

There's a difference between preparing for life and continually postponing it.

Perhaps there's room for both.

Less Finance. More Life.

We plan. We prepare. We try to make sure everything will be alright.

And there's nothing wrong with any of that.

But life has a way of happening while we're busy preparing for it.

Perhaps the challenge isn't to stop thinking about tomorrow.

It's to remember that today matters, too.

We're very good at making do, aren't we?

We adjust our spending. Put things off. Find ways to make what we've got stretch a little further.

And sometimes, that's exactly what life requires of us.

But I've been thinking about something.

What happens when the compromises we made for a little while quietly become the way we live?

There's nothing wrong with making do.

I just wonder whether we occasionally need to remind ourselves that it wasn't necessarily the original plan.

We're remarkably good at adjusting.

We adjust our spending. Our expectations. The things we'd hoped to do.

Sometimes we have to. That's life.

But something interesting happens when we make those adjustments for long enough.

We stop noticing them.

And what was meant to be temporary becomes normal.

There's nothing wrong with making do.

But there's a difference between making do for now and making do forever.
