Inflation has eased to 3.5% for the year to July 2026, down from 3.8% in June, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Housing remained the biggest contributor to annual inflation, driven largely by rising new dwelling costs, while food and recreation also added to the result. Underlying inflation, which strips out temporary price swings, held steady, a sign the bigger picture is still being closely watched.
For borrowers, a cooling inflation figure is generally seen as a positive sign, though it's just one piece of what the Reserve Bank considers when setting interest rates.
