Centrelink gifting rules can be confusing

You can gift up to $10,000 in a financial year, with a maximum of $30,000 over five financial years, without affecting your benefits.

Anything above these limits are treated as a deprived asset and may still be counted by Centrelink for 5 years. Before giving money, property, or transferring assets to family, make sure you understand the impact on your payments.

Centrelink assesses the value of your assets you own to determine your eligibility for payments like the Age Pension. Assets include bank accounts, investment properties, shares, superannuation (in some cases), and cars.

Why does Centrelink include zero-interest accounts in deeming?
Because deeming is based on your total financial assets, not the interest they earn.

Even at 0% interest, the balance is still assessed to:

Waiting on Centrelink to assess your Application? Do you have a trust, company or are self employed? These assessments often take much longer than standard claims, as Centrelink needs to review financial statements, trust deeds, company structures and distributions before determining entitlements.

In some cases, wait times can be 12 months or more.

The Carer Payment is a Centrelink income support payment for people who provide constant care to someone with a disability, serious medical condition, terminal illness, or an older person who is frail.

If your caring responsibilities prevent you from working full-time, you may be eligible.
You can still work, study, volunteer or train, provided you stay within the participation rules and meet the eligibility requirements. Always check your individual circumstances with Services Australia.

Can you receive a Carer Payment/allowance if someone you are caring for has a Home Care Package? Yes you can!

A Home Care Package doesn't stop eligibility for the Carer Payment. Centrelink looks at the level of care being provided and whether the caring responsibilities remain substantial and ongoing.

Don't assume you're not entitled understanding the rules could make a big difference to your finances.

If you inherit money and then pass it on to your children or anyone else Centrelink will treat it as a gift under the gifting rules. That could impact your Age Pension or other benefits.

Consider updating the will of the person leaving the inheritance so the assets pass directly to your children. If structured correctly, it may avoid being treated as a gift from you.

Before making any decisions, get advice one change in a will can make a big difference.
