Should Australians be able to access their super before 60 to pay their mortgage or rent?

Pauline Hanson’s proposal was discussed at the Financial Reviewl Wealth Summit. Access under 60 years of age is currently restricted, to compassionate grounds or severe financial hardship.

But should we expand these provisions to give Australians more flexibility when facing mortgage or rental stress?

There are two sides to the argument: easing financial pressure today versus protecting retirement savings for tomorrow.

If you are thnking of giving away your inheritance you need to understand the Centrelink’s gifting rules. Any amounts above the allowable gifting limits will still count as your assets for 5 years. To requalify for the Age Pension, you generally need to wait until the 5-year period ends or meet the assets test while the gifted amount is still counted. This clip is for Single Home Owners. Your financial assets are subject to deeming, which means Centrelink assumes your money is earning a certain rate of return regardless of what you actually earn. This can affect how much you get paid.

It’s important to understand that your financial position is assessed under both the Income Test and Assets Test, and getting the right information can make a significant difference.

Have you got a younger partner? You will only get the couple rate not single rate! If you’re approaching retirement and have a younger partner, it’s important to understand how your circumstances could affect your Centrelink entitlements.

Centrelink don't tell you the truth. Your full assets limit can not be financial. Your financial assets are assumed to earn a set rate of income, regardless of what they actually make. If you fill your entire asset allowance with financial investments, the "deemed income" kicks in, triggers the income test, and cuts your pension before you ever hit the asset ceiling!
