This Father’s Day, talk to Dad about the ‘Hey Dad’ scam.
It starts with a message like:

"Hey Dad, this is my new number..."
Then comes an urgent request for money.

Scammers pretend to be you and use emotion to get Dad to act before checking if it's really you.

An easy way to protect Dad? Agree on a code word. If he ever gets a message from "you" asking for money, he can ask for it before taking action.

Scammers are contacting people claiming their IP address has been compromised, exposed, or linked to suspicious activity. They may use fear and urgency to convince you to share personal information, allow access to your device, or transfer money.

Remember, having a public IP address is normal and does not mean you've been hacked.

It’s Scams Awareness Week by the National Anti-Scam Centre and this year’s theme is: No one's just a number.

Scams can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Last year, 274,577 Australians were scammed. Behind every one of those numbers is a person whose money, time or trust was stolen.

Being scammed is not a sign of carelessness or anything to do with intelligence. Scammers use sophisticated tactics designed to manipulate and deceive people.

It’s a great time to remind everyone of the three simple rules to follow:

✋ Stop: Take a moment before giving money or sharing personal information.
🔎 Check: Verify that the person or organisation you're dealing with is genuine.
🛡️ Protect: If something feels wrong, act quickly and contact your bank.

Millions of Australians will complete the Census tomorrow night and scammers will be looking to take advantage.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will never unexpectedly contact you asking for personal or financial information.

The ABS will never ask for:
• Bank or credit card details
• Passwords or your tax file number
• Money, donations or identity documents
• Payment, prizes or incentives for completing the Census
