Big Four, VC & The Science of Disruption: The Career of Dr. Günther Dobrauz-Saldapenna | LTAT #64

From venture capital and blockchain regulation to exponential technologies, circular economy and longevity — our latest episode of Let’s Talk About Tech with Dr Guenther Dobrauz-Saldapenna, Founder & Partner of exelixis capital AG, covers the forces reshaping industries, business models and society itself.

Together with CEO of Venionaire Capital Berthold Baurek-Karlic, Günther reflects on:

→ Why incumbents often fail to recognize disruption until it’s too late
→ The transition from centralized corporate structures to global network-based organizations
→ How blockchain and AI together could fundamentally reshape industries
→ The evolution of Crypto Valley and the early days of blockchain adoption in Switzerland
→ Why exponential technologies are accelerating faster than most people expected
→ The investment themes shaping the future: AI, blockchain, circular economy and longevity

One particularly interesting insight: technologies rarely disrupt industries directly — they redefine what business companies are actually in. Kodak thought it was in chemistry. In reality, it was in image capturing.

A fascinating conversation on technology cycles, innovation, investment thinking and what the next decade may look like.

Venionaire Capital at Vienna Blockchain Week 2026

On May 18–19, the Vienna Blockchain Week 2026, organized by neob.ai & Austrian Blockchain Center - ABC Research, will take place and host a concentrated gathering of builders, investors, financial institutions, and policymakers working across digital assets and Web3.

With 500+ participants, 70+ speakers, and attendees from over 35 countries, the event reflects the current state of the market: increasingly defined by infrastructure, regulation, and real-world deployment rather than purely narrative-driven cycles.

We are contributing to the program with two speaking engagements:

Our CEO Berthold Baurek-Karlic will speak on Day 2 (East Stage) in the panel: “Custody Models: Bank-Grade vs. Crypto-Native Infrastructure”

Alongside:
- Iva Rakocevic (Elevator Ventures) | Moderator
- Maximilian Bruckner (Zodia Custody)
- Andri C. Gmünder (Ledger Enterprise)
- Peter Stolcz (AMINA Bank)
- Rui M. (Crypto Finance Group)

In addition, Igor Hadziahmetovic, Investment Director of the Venionaire Web3 Fund and Web3 Tech Lead, will speak on Day 1 in the panel: “L1 vs L2 vs Appchains: Who Wins Which Workloads”

Alongside:
- Sven Wagenknecht (BTC-ECHO) | Moderator
- Zoltan Fazekas (Subzero Labs)
- Clemens Scarpatetti (Solva Blockchain Solutions)
- Marina Markezic (European Crypto Initiative)

Across both panels, a common theme emerges: the move toward production-grade systems. Whether in custody or protocol architecture, the conversation is no longer theoretical—it is about implementation, interoperability, and alignment with institutional requirements.

For investors, operators, and ecosystem participants, this is where relevant insights—and partnerships—are formed.

If you will be in Vienna, we look forward to connecting.

Longevity is no longer a niche wellness trend — it is becoming one of the most dynamic intersections of healthcare, technology, and entrepreneurship.

In the latest episode of Let’s Talk About Tech, CEO of Venionaire Capital Berthold Baurek-Karlic sat down with Johannes Weiss Founder & CEO of Longevity Center Vienna to unpack what modern longevity really means: not just extending lifespan, but enhancing healthspan through prevention, personalized medicine, and data-driven treatment models.

From neurofeedback and mitochondrial optimization to community as a core pillar of wellbeing, one message stood out clearly: the future of medicine is shifting from reactive care to root-cause, individualized health strategies. And as demand for longevity solutions accelerates globally, the sector is creating fertile ground for innovation, investment, and scalable ventures.

What emerged from the discussion is that longevity is not about chasing immortality — it is about improving quality of life through measurable, science-backed interventions. “Europe’s venture capital market is recovering in volume, but that capital is flowing into fewer companies. Investors are prioritizing predictability, resilience, and proven business models, while early-stage ventures face increasing scrutiny.”

In his recent interview with Robert Kleedorfer at KURIER, CEO of Venionaire Capital, Berthold Baurek-Karlic, outlines why Austria must adopt bolder approaches to risk financing, strengthen domestic capital participation, and ensure that innovation-driven companies can scale and remain in the country.

Austria has world-class talent, leading universities, and outstanding research capabilities. Yet without stronger access to growth capital, too many businesses risk being sold abroad, shifting long-term value creation elsewhere. Sustainable economic impact requires not only innovation, but also the financial structures to support it.

The conversation highlights the urgent need for institutional investors, pension funds, and financial institutions to play a more active role in private equity and venture capital, as seen in more mature markets globally.

"The defense industry is currently a symbiosis of the Moon Landing, the Wild West, and a Gold Rush" all at once."

In our latest episode of Let’s Talk About Tech, CEO of Venionaire Capital, Berthold Baurek-Karlic, sits down with Andreas Perotti, Defense Tech expert and entrepreneur, to discuss an industry that has moved from "zero startup community" to the center of global innovation since 2022.

Why investors should pay attention:

Software-Defined Warfare: We are moving toward a world where hardware is static but functionalities change overnight through software updates—the "Tesla" model for the battlefield.

The Autonomy Edge: The next wave isn't just drones; it’s Edge AI that can operate without signals, making traditional jamming obsolete.

The Local U-Turn: Geopolitical interests are driving a "Local for Local" procurement strategy, creating a unique, high-growth ecosystem for European tech.

At Venionaire Capital, we believe that entrepreneurship is one of the most efficient peace projects we have. When people have something to lose, they are less likely to choose conflict.

In the latest episode of Crypto Insights, Investment Director of the Venionaire Web3 Fund and Web3 Tech Lead, Igor Hadziahmetovic, dives deep into the data behind one of the strongest weeks for digital assets since early January.

Key Takeaways:

Institutional Conviction: Crypto investment products recorded a massive $1.1 billion in net inflows last week alone. BlackRock’s IBIT led the charge, signaling constructive institutional interest at current price levels.

The Market Contradiction: While spot ETFs show aggressive buying, the Commitment of Traders (COT) data reveals persistent bearish positioning in the futures market. This tension suggests that while capital is "itching" to be deployed, the trend shift isn't set in stone yet.

The Liquidity Gap: Bitcoin and Ether are showing signs of life and reclaiming key moving averages. However, the altcoin market remains "in the gutter" as liquidity is sucked away by the market leaders.

Strategic Outlook: Despite failed ceasefire negotiations and geopolitical noise, markets have shown a "snapback rally". Traditional heavyweights like J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley state: the next 3-12 months look favorable for adding risk-on exposure during pullbacks.

As we transition into a new phase of market maturity, understanding these institutional flows is critical for navigating the road ahead.

We are pleased to announce that the European Venture Sentiment Index (EVSI) Report for Q1/2026 is officially live.

This quarter’s findings reveal a complex landscape for the European venture ecosystem as the index fell below the neutral level for the first time since early 2024.

While overall investment volume remained surprisingly robust – driven by a significant concentration of capital into high-quality opportunities within AI and digital infrastructure – this growth is decoupled from investor confidence.

The market is currently navigating a period of heightened caution influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Gulf and rising energy prices, leading to a visible shift toward selective conviction.

We are observing a trend where investors are prioritizing profitability, capital efficiency, and liquidity management over broad-market expansion. As we move into the second quarter, the environment is increasingly defined by fewer but higher-conviction transactions and a strategic focus on operational ex*****on.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants whose insights continue to ensure the relevance and quality of this publication.

26/03/2026

Europe’s energy debate is entering a new phase.

The question is no longer just how to replace fossil fuels. It is how to build scalable, reliable energy systems that balance safety, economics and political reality.

In our latest episode of Let’s Talk About Tech, host Berthold Baurek-Karlic spoke with Florian Wagner, CEO and Founder of Emerald Horizon AG, about a concept that challenges the current narrative around nuclear energy.

Instead of traditional reactors, Emerald Horizon is working on Small Modular Generators (SMGs) – a near-nuclear approach designed to deliver the benefits of nuclear energy without its structural drawbacks. The idea is straightforward, but powerful:

– No critical chain reaction
– No uranium dependency
– No transuranic waste
– Modular, scalable deployment

At the same time, the model addresses one of Europe’s core constraints: how to bridge the gap between pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear positions while maintaining industrial competitiveness.

What makes this particularly relevant is not just the technology itself, but the broader implication. Energy is no longer a standalone sector. It is directly tied to geopolitical stability, industrial policy and capital allocation. Solutions that can operate at this intersection will define the next phase of the market.

This is exactly where new categories begin to emerge.

23/03/2026

Europe’s venture market is recovering, but not back to “risk-on.”

Activity and sentiment improved in 2025 (~$66bn invested), yet capital remains highly selective and concentrated at later stages.

➡️ The constraint is not demand. It’s liquidity.

At the same time, Europe’s edge is clear: deep specialisation in AI (infrastructure, applied layers) and ClimateTech, not broad exposure.

But the core issue remains: Europe builds innovation.
It still struggles to scale global champions.

Without stronger late-stage capital and exit pathways, value continues to be realised too early.

2026 comes down to one question: can companies scale, or are exits still the default?
