October Reflections: Celebrating Service, Freedom & Progress Together

October is a month of pride, purpose, and people!
We celebrate Customer Service Month, recognizing the power of service, and Independence Day on 24th October - a proud reminder of our nation’s resilience and freedom. For us at Agora Microfinance Zambia (AMZ), these two moments go hand in hand.

As we close out Customer Service Month, we’re reminded that service is more than what we do; it’s who we are.
Every conversation, every field visit, every loan disbursement carries the spirit of care, dignity, and empowerment. Whether in the field or at the branch, our mission remains the same: to serve with empathy and excellence.

As we approach Independence Day, we reflect on a deeper kind of freedom: the freedom to grow, to create, to build. At AMZ, true independence means giving individuals and communities the financial tools to shape their own futures- to grow businesses, educate children, and transform lives.

From the women leading village banks to the farmers preparing for their next harvest, each story mirrors the courage and determination that built our nation.

Last week, our CEO Susan Chileshe was in Nairobi, where she participated in strategic consultations contributing to the development of Grameen Crédit Agricole’s 2028 Strategy. Her input focused on the pillar of women’s inclusion, an area in which she has extensive experience and influence.

She noted that, based on conversations with women in Zambia and across the region, discussions on empowerment often evoke mixed reactions in communities. She emphasized the importance of delivering messages that are accurate, unifying, and contextually sensitive.

The CEO highlighted three central considerations:

1. Balanced Roles and Social Acceptance
No woman should feel compelled to choose between her career, her home, and her acceptance in society.

2. Men as Strategic Partners
Men are not to be sidelined. They remain a critical support system, and intentional efforts are required to counter the growing perception that young men have no place in a female-focused future.

3. Inclusive Financial Literacy
Financial literacy initiatives must empower both genders. She noted that when women advance economically while men feel left behind, this can fuel tension and, in some cases, domestic conflict.

She advocated for a path forward built on coexistence, co-creation, and partnership, reaffirming that competencies and leadership capacity are not gender exclusive. Gender-balanced perspectives, she noted, have been proven to strengthen decision-making.

In closing, she expressed appreciation to Vincent Brousseau and the Grameen Crédit Agricole team for their openness to client-informed perspectives and strategic collaboration.

As CEO of Agora Microfinance Zambia (AMZ), her contribution reflected the institution’s commitment to inclusive growth, responsible finance, and community-centered impact. Her engagement reinforced AMZ’s standing as a regional voice in gender-responsive strategy and social performance.
