Mineworkers Investment Trust

Mineworkers Investment Trust The Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT)was established in 1995 by the National Union of Mineworkers (

Mineworkers (NUM) as a wealth-creating entity to assist retrenched workers in the mining, energy and construction industries. hat has allowed MIT to make a meaningful contribution to the upliftment of its beneficiaries. Another business enterprise of the Trust is Numprop (Pty) Limited, a property investment company that manages facilities of all NUM properties as well as the development of commercial, retail and residential projects. The Trusts’ primary focus is on poverty alleviation, local economic development, enterprise development and job creation in labour-sending areas and under-resourced communities. MIT distributes funds to three non-profit organisations: the Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA), the JB Marks Education Trust Fund and the Elijah Barayi Memorial Training Centre. A new entity was initiated by the Trustees in 2012 namely the Sam Tambani Research Institute with the main aim to undertake objective research and analysis of substantive and primary issues affecting the life of the beneficiaries of the Mineworkers Investment Trust and their communities. The Mineworkers Investment Trust has disbursed funds to three key projects that benefit communities of current workers and ex-workers from the mining, energy and construction industries. These projects focus on developing self-sustaining capacity, providing education and imparting training and skills, all with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life of beneficiaries.

For 30 years, MIT’s impact has gone far beyond mining.

Through MDA, small-scale farmers have been supported to grow their work and strengthen their communities. In Mahikeng alone, MDA has created 1,500 jobs - providing training, hands-on experience and real skills that help people earn a living and support their families.

Maria Mariam Kgomo, Montle Thipe and Koketso Mosai share powerful stories of how MIT, through MDA, has helped uplift their lives and their community.

When Nomakorinte Gladys Nonkewuse looks back at her early days in the mining sector, she remembers the mud, the heavy PPE, and the sharp chill of winter mornings. “As a general worker, I had to wear all that gear and dig in the mud. The mine is a male-dominated environment, but we had to show […...

The story begins not with a boardroom, but with a promise. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) sought to broaden access to economic participation beyond a select few. Mineworkers investment company (MIC) was then established as a vehicle to generate sustainable returns, which would be channelled through the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT) to sustain and support the lives of mineworkers and the future of their children through its programmes.

“It was never about sustaining the union, It was about sustaining the lives of members and their children. That principle was non-negotiable.” Paul Nkuna recalls.
