In 2021, Boipelo was accepted into the JB Marks Education Trust Fund and began her journey toward a degree in Animal Science - driven by one dream: to own her own farm and share her knowledge with others.

Through the support of the National Union of Mineworkers and the Elijah Barayi Memorial Training Centre, Gift trained as a boilermaker and is now working in a skilled trade he’s proud of.

For 30 years, MIT’s impact has gone far beyond mining.

Through MDA, small-scale farmers have been supported to grow their work and strengthen their communities. In Mahikeng alone, MDA has created 1,500 jobs - providing training, hands-on experience and real skills that help people earn a living and support their families.

To mineworkers and their children, she has one clear message, “Education is the key that can open many doors. Dedicate yourself, keep trying until you reach your goal.”

She also stresses the importance of bursary programmes like JB Marks Education Trust Fund. “In mining, many employees are uneducated. JB Marks helps them improve their education, gain better opportunities, and prepare for the future, for themselves and their children,” she says.

The story begins not with a boardroom, but with a promise. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) sought to broaden access to economic participation beyond a select few. Mineworkers investment company (MIC) was then established as a vehicle to generate sustainable returns, which would be channelled through the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT) to sustain and support the lives of mineworkers and the future of their children through its programmes.

“It was never about sustaining the union, It was about sustaining the lives of members and their children. That principle was non-negotiable.” Paul Nkuna recalls.
