Only 60% of learners who started Grade 1 in 2013 made it to matric in 2024 - down from 68% the year before. Even more worrying: over 400,000 learners dropped out between Grade 10 and 12.

The new (BELA) Act, signed into law in December 2024, aims to fix some of the big challenges in our schools - from access and language policies to governance. It’s a big step for education in South Africa, but there’s still a long way to go.
