When SweepSouth hit a growth ceiling, the Vumela ESD Fund helped open the door to its next stage of growth.

Launched with FNB South Africa, Vumela was a first-of-its-kind fund, created to back high-potential black-owned businesses with the capital and support they needed to grow. Edge Growth has supported the implementation of the fund, working alongside businesses with finance, mentoring, skills development and practical growth support.

SweepSouth is one example of what that investment can make possible.
The business went on to secure further investment, expand internationally and create work opportunities for more than 10,000 SweepStars, 74% of whom were identified as primary breadwinners.

It is a powerful example of the wider impact Vumela has helped create over time: backing businesses that grow, create jobs and open up opportunities far beyond their own doors.

People often think I’m serious or unapproachable when they first meet me, but once they get to know me, they quickly discover that I’m friendly, easy to talk to and a little goofy.

I’m someone who prefers finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. I value meaningful conversations, enjoy learning and always appreciate the opportunity to connect with others - usually with a little humour along the way.

Professionally, I have had the opportunity to support SMEs throughout the funding process from a legal and compliance perspective. My previous experience included reviewing and coordinating legal documentation for funding transactions, and I look forward to building on this experience in my new role at Edge Growth.

I can’t survive a day without good music, especially soulful R&B. Whether I’m at a daytime event or relaxing at home, there is usually music playing somewhere in the background.

I’m also a self-confessed “lyric girl”, so you can always count on me to sing along when a good song comes on.

The role aligns with my existing skills and experience while offering new challenges that will help me expand my knowledge.

The warmth and friendliness of everyone I met throughout the interview process also stood out to me. From the beginning, I felt welcomed and as though I was already part of the Edge Growth family.

We were proud to see Janice Johnston, CEO of Edge Growth Ventures, take part in the DLO African Women in Leadership Summit 2026 as a panellist for the session:

It was a conversation that matters deeply to us.

Access to funding is important, but it is only one part of the picture. For African businesses to grow well, they also need the right support, stronger routes to market, fair payment practices and partners who understand the realities of building a business.

In her recent article, The Intention Gap, Janice reflects on what happens when good intentions around SME growth are not carried through into procurement processes, payment terms and working-capital support. Too often, a business gets the opportunity but is left to carry the risk on its own.

Janice shared some of what we’ve learnt through our work with entrepreneurs, funders and corporate partners, while also hearing from others who are equally committed to helping African businesses grow in a way that lasts.
