There are only a few organisations in South Africa's financial services landscape that can claim both deep historical roots and continued relevance in a rapidly evolving industry. The FIA is one of them, shaped by more than seven decades of collective advocacy, professional development, and industry stewardship.
The FIA's story is not the result of a single founding moment. It is the gradual coming together of multiple professional associations. On 1 January 2008, SAFSIA and the IBC formally merged to create the Financial Intermediaries Association of Southern Africa. Six months later, LUASA joined, completing a unification with combined roots stretching back to 1949.
Being part of the FIA has never been just about membership. It is about belonging to something bigger: a profession with history, a community with shared purpose, and a collective commitment to the people it serves.
That is the foundation, and from it, the FIA continues to grow.
This is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we'll be looking back through the FIA's archives, tracing how today's unified intermediary voice grew from our predecessors, and looking ahead at what collective representation means for the profession's future.
