A small detail that revealed a bigger opportunity.

Magda Wierzycka, CEO at Sygnia, noticed a clear contrast within one company – with one space operating on a completely different level.

That difference became a turning point in her career.

JSE delistings reflect a broader structural issue rather than a single cause.

Haroon Bhorat, Chair: Investment Committee, notes that the trend is shaped by firm-level fragility, macroeconomic instability, rising regulatory costs and shifts in global capital allocation. More concerning is the profile of firms exiting the exchange, with smaller and innovation-driven companies increasingly underrepresented, weakening the JSE’s role in supporting long-term economic growth.

What a game. What a weekend.
DHS vs Westville was exactly the kind of rugby that makes you remember why you fell in love with this sport. A slow first half, and then DHS just switched it on, running out 24–19 winners in a second half that had everyone on their feet.
But the score almost doesn't matter. What got us was the sheer joy of the crowds, the bravado rugby, and a kind of cracker finish that gives you goosebumps!!!!
We were there for both sides, and we loved every minute of it.

JSE exits: more strategy than failure 📉🏦

Haroon Bhorat, Chair: Investment Committee, notes that JSE delistings between 2007 and 2024 were primarily linked to corporate restructuring activity, with mergers and acquisitions accounting for a substantial portion of exits.

Compliance-related removals also contributed to the trend, while distress-driven departures remained relatively limited, suggesting a market increasingly shaped by strategic dealmaking rather than business failure.

Energy shock and EM pressure rise 📉🛢️

Steven Empedocles, Head: Index Management, highlights escalating geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions in global oil markets, with rerouted shipping routes, higher insurance costs and significant infrastructure damage keeping prices elevated. The International Energy Agency warns that the full impact of the disruption is not yet reflected in prices, with recovery potentially taking years.

At the macro level, the IMF has revised global growth lower, with emerging markets seeing the largest downward adjustment alongside a higher inflation outlook for 2026.

China’s AI export engine and EM divergence 🇨🇳📊

Steven Empedocles, Head: Index Management, notes that while Chinese equities have lagged broader emerging markets, China continues to strengthen its position as a key global AI exporter across the full value chain - from hardware and semiconductors to software and deployment.

Recent advances, including DeepSeek’s V4 Pro, underscore rapid AI progress at significantly lower cost, reinforcing China’s competitive edge. However, questions remain around how quickly it can move into higher-value segments of the technology stack, while EM performance has been led by tech-heavy markets like Taiwan and South Korea.
