As promised, we’re continuing our coverage of education credits this week.

Education credits help with the cost of higher education. They can reduce the amount of tax owed on your tax return and possibly increase your refund. There are two education credits available.

Today's topic... The Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). The LLC is usually referred to as the "smaller one" in terms of education credits.

The LLC has a lot of similarities to the AOTC.
1) The student must be yourself, your spouse, or a dependent claimed on your tax return.
2) The student must be enrolled in an eligible educational institution.

Unlike the AOTC, it is not limited to the first four years of post-high school education. As the name implies, it can be used for the student’s lifetime.

Another key distinction is the LLC has a max credit of $2,000 and is a non-refundable credit.

And of course, there are income limitations. There are some income limitations. Modified AGI must be less than $90k ($180k if MFJ).

This is simply a general layout of the credit. For questions specific to your situation, please reach out to our office directly.

Make it a great day!

This week, we're covering education credits.

Education credits help with the cost of higher education. They can reduce the amount of tax owed on your tax return and possibly increase your refund. There are two education credits available.

Today's topic... The American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC). The AOTC is often referred to as the "big one" in terms of education credits.

In order to claim it, the student (can be yourself, your spouse, or a dependent you claim on your return)…

1) Must be enrolled at an “eligible educational institution”.
2) Must be enrolled at least half time for at least one academic period
3) Must be in a program pursuing a degree (or other recognized education credential)
4) Qualified expenses include tuition, enrollment fees, and course materials the student needs for a course of study are considered qualified education expenses, even if they are not paid to the school.
5) Max credit amount is $2,500. Up to $1,000 can be refundable.
6) There are some income limitations. Modified AGI must be less than $90k ($180k if MFJ).

Eligible Educational Institution:
https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/eligible-educational-institution

Of note:
The credit is only available for four years total per student. Therefore, tax planning and strategy are indispensable on this credit. For example, don’t take this credit for the $68 in tuition you paid on your high school student’s concurrent enrollment – no matter how hard Turbo Tax wants you to waste it.

This is a general layout of the credit. For questions specific to your situation, please reach out to our office directly.

Make it a great day!

Can I have the attention of the class please?

This one is for the teachers. By now, we all know about the “old” Educator Expense Deduction. In short, it allows teachers to deduct up to $300 in out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

As part of the One Big Beautiful Act passed last year, eligible educators can now deduct expenses in excess of $300 on their Schedule A - so yes, you do have to itemize in order to claim it. There is no set dollar limit on this deduction. Another distinction of note is that the “Schedule A” deduction has a broader definition of eligible educators (because why not memorize two distinct definitions of “eligible educator”) and includes Sports Administrators and Coaches.

You can read it directly from the source here: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc458

The Child Tax Credit…

Today's topic is one of high interest for a lot of taxpayers and families. This subject could be 4-5 pages on its own. I'm going to hit some of the highlights here.

Last year, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made permanent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act increase in the child tax credit (CTC). If no action had been taken, the credit would have reverted to $1,000 per child.

For 2026, the CTC amount is $2,200 and will adjust for inflation moving forward.

The refundable portion of the CTC, which is the Additional Child Tax Credit (or ACTC), remains "up to" $1,700 for 2026.

Other Notes
1) Taxpayers may qualify for the full amount for each child if they earn $200,000 as an individual filer or $400,000 for joint filers. The credit phases out for incomes above that threshold.
2) Children must be under age 17 as of December 31of the tax year to be eligible.
3) A Social Security number will be required for the taxpayer (or at least one spouse for joint filers) who is claiming the credit and for the child.
4) Additionally, the child must still meet the Age, Relationship, Residency, Citizenship, and Financial Support tests to claim the credit.

As stated above, this is a very general post and is not a substitute for one-on-one tax planning.

If you have further questions, or want to see how these changes will impact your tax return, schedule your free consultation with our office today.

Make it a great day!

A key tax change for small business owners to know heading into 2026…
The QBI deduction is now permanent, and starting in 2026, the phase-in range expands from $50,000 to $75,000 for most filers and from $100,000 to $150,000 for joint filers. That wider range could allow more business owners to benefit from the QBI deduction!
