If you farm in Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, or Butte Counties, several California agriculture law changes that took effect in 2026 are already affecting how operations run.

Labor enforcement is more aggressive than it has been in years. County commissioners now have expanded authority over idle and abandoned acreage. Food date labeling standards changed July 1. On-farm composting rules expanded, but so did the liability exposure that comes with them.

Most of these changes do not show up in headlines. They show up in an audit, a county notice, or a vendor flagging a problem at the worst possible time.

California premiums through Tesla Insurance jumped 585% in a single year. At the same time, the California Department of Insurance formally cited the company for claims handling violations, including failing to respond to claimants within 15 days and allowing months to pass without resolving claims. In 2025 alone, there were 1,481 complaints and 1,969 regulatory violations filed against Tesla Insurance Services in California.
