September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the people who depend on us every day.

For many families, life insurance is more than a policy. The death benefit is a way to help protect a spouse, help support children's futures, and help provide financial stability when it is needed most.

Whether you're raising young children, paying a mortgage, or planning for the future, having the right coverage can help give you confidence that your loved ones will be cared for.

This month, take a moment to review your family's protection strategy and make sure it still aligns with your goals.

At Western & Southern Life, we're here to help you make informed decisions every step of the way.

Early in my career, I thought selling on the first appointment was a sign of success. My manager and I took pride in making that happen. Looking back, I would rarely recommend selling at the first meeting. Insurance and investments are an intangible item… you can’t see them or touch them. Therefore, the client really must believe in the end results to commit to paying a premium or setting up an investment plan. To find out why it’s so important to the client, I got good at asking questions:

-What matters most to your family?
-What are you trying to accomplish?
-What do you want your retirement to look like once you get there?
-What would happen to your family if you were no longer here?

Those questions allow the client to really think; and take ownership of the process. I entered this industry through what felt like trial by fire. I had a mortgage and a baby on the way, so failure didn’t feel like an option. What helped me most was being able to ask for help when I needed it.

One of my mentors who made a significant difference was Barry Danko. I had already been in the business for about 10 years when we met, but his guidance helped me see ways I could continue growing. More recently, James Schleicher has continued to support that growth and help me level up. The lesson I would share with someone beginning a career today is simple:

Be humble enough to ask for help.

Many of us believe experience means we should already have every answer. It does not. Experience should make us more willing to ask better questions, learn from others and acknowledge the areas where we can improve. The same applies when serving clients. When you are no longer worried about forcing a sale or losing one, you can focus attention where it belongs: on the person sitting across from you. The client doesn’t need me to be the hero of their story. They need me to listen, ask the right questions and help them choose a path that is genuinely their own.

A good advisor does not have to use the Force. They do have to understand the forces shaping their client’s decisions.

👀 This Wednesday, my teammate Garrett Sparks is posting practical ways families can enjoy gathering season without allowing the cost of hosting to take over the celebration.

August 29 is The Marine Corps Reserve’s Birthday. It recognizes the contributions of reserve Marines in augmenting and reinforcing active-duty forces. It honors their readiness to serve in times of conflict and emergency.

One of the most important lessons I ever received came from a priest who mentored me:

“Don’t judge anyone. You don’t know what happened to them last night.”

That advice has stayed with me through many years of ministry, community involvement and work with clients. After college, I spent 10 years in youth ministry. For the past several years, I have also helped with retreats and confirmation candidates at my church. Over that time, I have seen people experience some of life’s best and worst moments.

-Illness.
-Tragic deaths.
-Unexpected loss.
-Personal struggles that may never be visible to the people around them.

Those experiences taught me that we don’t always need to have the perfect words or an immediate answer. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is be there. That lesson has influenced how I serve clients, too. When a family has lost a loved one, their attention should be focused on grieving and healing, NOT worrying about their finances. I cannot remove the pain of a loss. But thoughtful preparation can help reduce some of the financial uncertainty surrounding it. It can give a family more space to focus on the people who need them most.

My community work has also reminded me that meaningful relationships rarely develop through one conversation. For approximately 16 years, I have been involved with IRN, a local networking group. I currently serve as president of one chapter and help another chapter as an area director. As someone who is naturally introverted, traditional prospecting never felt natural to me. Cold calling and knocking on doors was very difficult. IRN gave me the opportunity to see the same people each week, listen to their stories and build trust over time. Those relationships have not only helped me grow professionally, but I am equally proud when I see other members form connections, support one another and grow their own businesses.

Community is not built by being the loudest person in the room.

It is built by continuing to show up.

👀This Saturday, the next post in our series features Staff Manager, James Schleicher, sharing why the Cleveland North team is approaching this campaign differently and revealing the next part of what we are planning for the fall.
