A brand-new gas well was just permitted on August 28, 2026, in Hill County, Montana.

The proposed Ollie #1, operated by Hereford Resources, LLC, is planned as a vertical well targeting the Souris River/Red River formations.

A complete title chain for one mineral deal can easily fill a 2” 3-ring binder. For this one in particular, I pulled just over 500 pages of deeds and leases to prove ownership, calculate net mineral acres, and come up with an accurate price.

The 4-mile lateral shown below has demonstrated promising production potential. In just ten months, the well has produced approximately 225,000 barrels of crude oil, averaging roughly 750 barrels of oil per day. This is an exceptional production rate, particularly for the Montana portion of the Bakken. The site is located in Roosevelt county.

The “U”-shaped oil and gas well shown below is currently being drilled in western Richland County, Montana.

U-shaped, or “horseshoe,” well designs are a relatively new development in unconventional oil and gas drilling. Shell pioneered what is generally considered the first commercial modern U-shaped well in the Delaware Basin around 2019, followed by Chesapeake, which drilled a U-lateral in the Eagle Ford around 2020.

Deployment of this technology in the Bakken has been very limited. A 2025 technical review identifies a Slawson well as the first known U-lateral in the Bakken.

Two locations in eastern Montana—both in Richland County. One is currently being drilled, while the other is being fracked. Add in several active rigs in Roosevelt County and another in Valley County, and it’s clear that eastern Montana has once again become a drilling hotspot.

It’s fitting, too. The Elm Coulee Field in eastern Montana was one of the key catalysts of the modern shale oil revolution, helping demonstrate the potential of horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing in the Bakken.
