As I was getting ready to leave the office today, we were hit with strong storms and hail. Within an hour I had over 20 weather-related claims calls. I'm staying late tonight to go through all of our calls and touch base with customers who need assistance. My wife even brought dinner to me! Thank you for your patience — we’re here to help!

My Grandpa Jim’s birthday is today, and I wanted to share a gift he gave to me years ago. We celebrated his 100th birthday ten years ago, and he passed 10 days after reaching this milestone. He gave me many of his WW2 mementos, all of them special and meaningful. I’m featuring this one today, as it has a place of honor in my office. Grandpa had the opportunity as an officer to personally meet Joe Louis, the famous world championship heavyweight boxer, when he was enlisted in the military doing boxing exhibitions for the soldiers. Louis gave him an autographed photo, addressed to him personally.

The story he likes to tell is that upon closer inspection, Grandpa realized that Louis had misspelled his last name, as “Henning” instead of “Hennig” (which happens all the time to me as well!). When asked if he let Joe Louis know he spelled his name wrong, Grandpa would joke, “Heck no! I wasn’t going to tell the Champ he spelled my name wrong, I didn’t want to get my lights punched out!”

Joe Louis served honorably and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the US war effort, notably at a time when the military was still segregated. He received full military honors and burial at Arlington National Cemetery. We were able to visit his grave when we were there a few years ago. It’s amazing to think that my grandpa, for just a brief moment of time, had the opportunity to cross paths with him, and that I have the proof of that sitting in my office!
