Millions of seniors are losing their Medicare Advantage plan for 2027, and many don't know it yet.
About 3.2 million people nationwide will lose their current Medicare Advantage coverage next year, and in 193 counties there will be no Medicare Advantage plans offered at all. Roughly 638,000 beneficiaries live in those counties.
If your plan is one of the ones shutting down, you should have received a non-renewal notice by mail in early October. Don't let it sit in the stack of mail you've been meaning to open.
Here's what that notice means, in plain language:
1. If you do nothing, you'll generally be moved to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027. Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage, so you'd need to enroll in a separate Part D plan or you'll have a gap.
2. You can enroll in a new plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs through December 7, 2026.
3. If your plan was terminated, you also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that runs until February 28, 2027.
Before you decide anything, check three things: whether your doctors are in-network, whether your prescriptions are covered, and what the plan actually costs out of pocket, not just the monthly premium.
Life insurance is also offered alongside Medicare guidance, so we can look at protecting your whole picture at once.
