Tips to Drive Down Auto Insurance Costs
By Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready

I hear from many Oklahomans who are concerned about the rising costs of insurance, including auto insurance. Americans are facing this challenge nationwide. Many factors go into determining rates, and we may be unable to change some aspects, like inflation, insurance market conditions and disasters. Still, Oklahomans can save on auto insurance in several ways, for example, by driving safely and distraction-free – consider this your lighthearted reminder to put down your cell phone!

Let's look at what's happening and what you can do to lower your costs.

Auto rates are influenced by many factors, both on an industry-wide and an individual level. The increased number of natural disasters, the rising cost of repairs, higher inflation and interest rates, and more significant reinsurance costs go into these determinations. In Oklahoma, frequent and severe hail and windstorms are considerable risks, as is the number of uninsured motorists. In 2022, the Insurance Information Institute estimated that 11.8% of drivers in Oklahoma were uninsured. Still, you, the individual, can take steps to save.

Several different aspects impact your rate on a personal level. Insurers consider the type of vehicle you drive, your driving record, credit score, vehicle use, and where you live and garage your vehicle when determining the number. When you can present less financial risk, you'll save more money.

Driving safely is one of the biggest and easiest ways to reduce costs. You cannot control how others drive, but you can control your driving. Obey traffic laws, avoid collisions, eliminate distractions (Put down your cell phone!), and maintain a clean driving record. Insurance companies offer lower premiums to drivers who demonstrate safe driving habits. Driving safely and responsibly reduces your risk and protects yourself and others.

Here are some additional ways you can save on insurance:

Shop around. Rates can vary significantly from insurer to insurer. Compare quotes to find affordable coverage that meets your needs. In Oklahoma, we have over 100 companies licensed to offer auto insurance.
Ask about discounts. Most insurers offer discounts for bundling, completing defensive driving courses, military service, and being a good student. Don't be afraid to ask your insurer about these savings opportunities.
Ask your agent about telematics. Some insurers now offer usage-based insurance programs that track your driving habits. Safe drivers can earn significant discounts this way. Insure U's DriveCheck can help determine if usage-based insurance is right for you.
Raise your deductible. If you can afford a higher deductible, adjust your coverage to save.
Reduce coverage on older vehicles. If your car is worth less than 10 times your premium, consider dropping comprehensive and collision coverage.
Rising auto insurance premiums pose challenges to Oklahomans. Some of the factors you cannot change, but there are some things you can do to save money.

Currently, freezing drizzle is impacting Tulsa's roadways and causing dangerous and slick travel, with multiple accidents occurring across the city.

Drivers are advised to stay off the roads.

This morning, the Police and Fire Departments, as well as EMSA, have been working multiple accidents. Road conditions are deceiving, as moderate amounts of ice are enough to cause vehicles to slide, even at slow speeds. Tulsans are asked to stay home for their safety and to also help preserve the response capabilities of public safety resources.

Reporting an Accident
Fender bender, no injuries
⦁ Be aware of your surroundings
⦁ Pull over somewhere safe and don't stop in the middle of a slick road or highway
⦁ Exchange information (i.e. name, address, and phone numbers of all drivers; DL information and verification; the tag year, state, and number of each vehicle involved; the year, make, and model of each vehicle involved; the name, address, and phone number of the registered owner of each vehicle involved)
⦁ Safely leave the scene
⦁ Make a traffic collision report online at https://www.tulsapolice.org/tulsapolicetrafficcollisionreport
Inoperable/stuck vehicle - Call Tulsa Police Non-Emergency at (918) 596-9222

Injury crash/life-threatening emergency - Call 911

Street Operations
The City's brine crews started at midnight and have moved to applying salt on all of Tulsa's main roads with a focus on bridges, hills, and overpasses. Once the snow starts, the City will switch to snow plowing operations.

Extreme cold and wind chills continue to be the primary threat to health and safety. The City is working with A Way Home for Tulsa agencies to get everyone inside. Multiple warming stations are open, in addition to emergency shelters. To see the complete list of those shelters, in addition to needed donation items and how you can report someone in need of shelter, visit Housing Solutions' Winter Weather Resources page at https://www.housingsolutionstulsa.org/get-help/winter-weather-information/

Metro Link Tulsa
Due to road conditions this morning, all bus service has been canceled. For the latest updates on bus services, follow Metro Link Tulsa on Facebook, .

Trash & Recycling
With the freezing drizzle, neighborhood streets are getting too slick for trash haulers, and the rest of all trash pickup operations have been canceled today. Tulsans with missed service today, and scheduled service Wednesday and Thursday (currently scheduled, but could change), are asked to keep their trash carts at the curb until they can be safely picked up, as the safety of our crews is paramount.

As a reminder, recycling has been canceled for the rest of this week. Recycling customers will be able to put out extra recyclables in a recyclable container on their regular service day next week.

City Service Updates
City Hall - Cashier stations on the main floor at City Hall and at the Permit Center on 4th floor will be closed through Wednesday. The Clerk’s Office is closed today as well. The regular meeting for the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission (TMPAC) is canceled on Wednesday.

Tulsa Municipal Court – Tulsa Municipal Court is closed through Wednesday and cases scheduled for Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 will be automatically rescheduled for April 3.

Tulsa Animal Services – The Tulsa Animal Services shelter at 3031 N. Erie Ave. is closed through Wednesday for public adoptions. Lost pet adoptions and return-to-owner services will remain unaffected.

Development Services Inspections – Inspections from the City’s Development Services department are canceled through Wednesday and will resume when neighborhood street conditions improve. We will be doing emergency gas meter inspections (pending weather severity). To schedule an inspection for critical utility repairs, contact Stephen Scott at (918) 519-8769 for Plumbing and Mechanical, Curtis Blevins at (918) 857-4004 for Building, or Steve Malugani at (918) 519-8746 for Electrical.

Tulsa Parks Closures
⦁ All Tulsa Parks Recreation Centers will be closed through Wednesday, including Centennial, Oxley Nature Center and Tulsa Garden Center.
⦁ Mohawk and Page Belcher Golf Courses will be closed until at least Friday. Re-opening will be determined by course conditions.
⦁ The Williams Crossing Pedestrian Bridge and unheated restrooms will be closed until at least Thursday. Trails will not be plowed until after snowfall has ceased so trails may be hazardous.
⦁ The Tulsa Zoo will be closed through Thursday.
⦁ The Tulsa Performing Arts Center, BOK event center, and Convention Center will be closed to the public Tuesday and Wednesday. At this point, public events scheduled for this weekend will go on as planned.

While in-person services are closed, most City business can be conducted online or over the phone:
⦁ Pay an online utility bill www.cityoftulsa.org/utilities

Bulky Waste/Dead Animal Pickup
All scheduled bulky waste pickups will be postponed through Feb. 20, with services expected to resume Feb. 21. While affected customers have been notified, missed collections will be rescheduled as follows: Tuesday, Feb. 18, pickups will move to Tuesday, Feb. 25; both Wednesday, Feb. 12, and Wednesday, Feb. 19, pickups will move to Saturday, Feb. 22; and Thursday, Feb. 20, pickups will move to Thursday, Feb. 27.

Additionally, dead animal pickups will only be conducted for large animals requiring specialized machinery.

The Green Waste Facility is closed.

Waterline Breaks
During times of extreme cold weather, waterline breaks can occur. To report waterline breaks, residents can first check the waterline break board at www.cityoftulsa.org/breakboard to see whether the break has been reported. To make a report, call Water Dispatch at (918) 596-9488. Residents can also report waterline breaks via email, with no wait times, to [email protected].

Repairs are prioritized based on when the waterlines are shut down. The City’s main focus is to repair waterlines and restore service to all affected customers.

Tips for preventing household frozen or busted pipes can be found online at www.cityoftulsa.org/protectingpipes

Pet Safety
Tulsa Animal Services is working with the Tulsa Day Center and the Tulsa Dream Center (shelters that accept pets) to ensure they have needed resources, such as vaccines and intake sheets.

As a reminder, all pets need to be brought inside when temperatures drop below 25 degrees (enforceable by ordinance). Pets with outdoor access need to have access to water that isn’t left outside, as it will freeze.

If you see someone leaving their dog out for prolonged periods of time in this weather, call Tulsa Animal Services at (918) 596-8001. Pets should only be let out for short periods of time for things like bathroom breaks, etc.

Tulsa Health Department
All Tulsa Health Department locations are closed today.
