We have goals. We have standards. We have what we know we need to do.

And then discipline—that key Stoic virtue—determines whether we do it or not.

The problem is that some people seem to think this discipline must be ironclad…and then they beat themselves up when they fall short.

The Stoics had high standards. They had important jobs. They had a lot they needed to do.

They also understood that perfection was not possible. What was possible, Epictetus said, was striving to be better. What mattered, Marcus Aurelius said, was how quickly you picked yourself up after you were jarred by circumstances.

Sometimes we’ll fall short. Sometimes we’ll have to make an exception. Sometimes we’ll just plain forget our training and our standards. But it’s like that famous line in Steinbeck’s East of Eden (which has so many Stoic themes it’s worth a re-read—grab a copy at The Painted Porch) where Adam Trask, who has been impossibly hard on himself and is racked with guilt, is told by the family servant, Lee (who, by the way, loves to quote Marcus Aurelius):

And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.
And that’s the point. We don’t have to be perfect, we just have to choose to be good. We have that choice. We can begin again. We can still fight it through.

Good is better than perfect because it’s real. Good is better than perfect because it’s human—it’s the striving, the effort, the genuine desire to do what is right. Good is what we are. Good is what we have to keep trying to be, every day.

05/03/2026

I could not understand, among other things, how all these people—with so much life in and before them—do not become rich—and I don’t understand it now. I remember being told of a poor wretch I once knew, who had died of hunger. I was almost beside myself with rage! I believe if I could have resuscitated him I would have done so for the sole purpose of murdering him!

“Occasionally I was so much better that I could go out; but the streets used to put me in such a rage that I would lock myself up for days rather than go out, even if I were well enough to do so! I could not bear to see all those preoccupied, anxious-looking creatures continuously surging along the streets past me! Why are they always anxious? What is the meaning of their eternal care and worry? It is their wickedness, their perpetual detestable malice—that’s what it is—they are all full of malice, malice!

“Whose fault is it that they are all miserable, that they don’t know how to live, though they have fifty or sixty years of life before them? Why did that fool allow himself to die of hunger with sixty years of unlived life before him?

“And everyone of them shows his rags, his toil-worn hands, and yells in his wrath: ‘Here are we, working like cattle all our lives, and always as hungry as dogs, and there are others who do not work, and are fat and rich!’ The eternal refrain! And side by side with them trots along some wretched fellow who has known better days, doing light porter’s work from morn to night for a living, always blubbering and saying that ‘his wife died because he had no money to buy medicine with,’ and his children dying of cold and hunger, and his eldest daughter gone to the bad, and so on. Oh! I have no pity and no patience for these fools of people. Why can’t they be Rothschilds? Whose fault is it that a man has not got millions of money like Rothschild? If he has life, all this must be in his power! Whose fault is it that he does not know how to live his life?

“Oh! it’s all the same to me now—now! But at that time I would soak my pillow at night with tears of mortification, and tear at my blanket in my rage and fury. Oh, how I longed at that time to be turned out—me, eighteen years old, poor, half-clothed, turned out into the street, quite alone, without lodging, without work, without a crust of bread, without relations, without a single acquaintance, in some large town—hungry, beaten (if you like), but in good health—and then I would show them—

“What would I show them?

“Oh, don’t think that I have no sense of my own humiliation! I have suffered already in reading so far. Which of you all does not think me a fool at this moment—a young fool who knows nothing of life—forgetting that to live as I have lived these last six months is to live longer than grey-haired old men. Well, let them laugh, and say it is all nonsense, if they please. They may say it is all fairy-tales, if they like; and I have spent whole nights telling myself fairy-tales. I remember them all. But how can I tell fairy-tales now? The time for them is over. They amused me when I found that there was not even time for me to learn the Greek grammar, as I wanted to do. ‘I shall die before I get to the syntax,’ I thought at the first page—and threw the book under the table. It is there still, for I forbade anyone to pick it up.

“If this ‘Explanation’ gets into anybody’s hands, and they have patience to read it through, they may consider me a madman, or a schoolboy, or, more likely, a man condemned to die, who thought it only natural to conclude that all men, excepting himself, esteem life far too lightly, live it far too carelessly and lazily, and are, therefore, one and all, unworthy of it. Well, I affirm that my reader is wrong again, for my convictions have nothing to do with my sentence of death. Ask them, ask any one of them, or all of them, what they mean by happiness! Oh, you may be perfectly sure that if Columbus was happy, it was not after he had discovered America, but when he was discovering it! You may be quite sure that he reached the culminating point of his happiness three days before he saw the New World with his actual eyes, when his mutinous sailors wanted to tack about, and return to Europe! What did the New World matter after all? Columbus had hardly seen it when he died, and in reality he was entirely ignorant of what he had discovered. The important thing is life—life and nothing else! What is any ‘discovery’ whatever compared with the incessant, eternal discovery of life?

April brings more than spring flowers to Oklahoma. Severe weather, including hail, damaging winds, lightning and tornadoes, can also occur. But we don't have to be afraid! Let's see ourselves as prepared, not as potential victims. A few simple steps now can make a big difference later.

Build or Update Your Home Inventory

Having an inventory on hand will save you time if you need to file a claim. You can use a physical inventory. I highly recommend downloading the app from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Document your home and belongings by taking photos and videos and writing down serial numbers. If you opt for a physical inventory list, scan it, keep a physical copy in a safe place, and upload a digital copy to a secure cloud service.

Create or Refresh Your Home Safety Plan

If you don't have a home safety plan, create it. Update your current plan if you have one. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive alerts and that your emergency contacts are up to date. Designate your safe places for different disaster scenarios, such as tornadoes, floods, and wildfires. Take this opportunity to clean out your storm shelter. Don't forget to factor in your loved ones' unique needs.

Pack Your Go-Bag

For your go-bag, have copies of important documents, identification, insurance policies, cash, nonperishable food, and water ready to go. Pack safety items like masks, gloves, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, a phone charger, and a power bank for electronic devices. When watches or warnings are issued, add clothing and any last-minute necessities so you're ready to leave at a moment's notice.

Review Your Insurance Policies

Take time to understand your policy. Know your deductible and whether your home is covered for actual cash value or replacement cost. Talk to your agent about whether your coverage reflects today's rebuilding costs. Depending on where you live, you may also need separate flood or earthquake coverage.

Insurance for Rental Property Owners
With the rise of websites like Airbnb, VRBO, and more, Rental property insurance is becoming more important than ever. Rental property insurance, not to be confused with renters insurance, offers coverage to landlords of rental properties. It provides insurance to protect the property's structures, liability for incidents that occur on the premises, the owner's personal contents on the property, and more.

At the sunset of her sixties, Grace Paley (December 11, 1922–August 22, 2007) took up the question of “upstaging time,” ending her magnificent meditation with the parting gift of life-changing advice she herself had received from her aging father:

My father had decided to teach me how to grow old. I said O.K. My children didn’t think it was such a great idea. If I knew how, they thought, I might do so too easily. No, no, I said, it’s for later, years from now. And besides, if I get it right it might be helpful to you kids in time to come.

They said, Really?

My father wanted to begin as soon as possible.

[…]

Please sit down, he said. Be patient. The main thing is this — when you get up in the morning you must take your heart in your two hands. You must do this every morning.

That’s a metaphor, right?

Metaphor? No, no, you can do this. In the morning, do a few little exercises for the joints, not too much. Then put your hands like a cup over and under the heart. Under the breast. He said tactfully. It’s probably easier for a man. Then talk softly, don’t yell. Under your ribs, push a little. When you wake up, you must do this massage. I mean pat, stroke a little, don’t be ashamed. Very likely no one will be watching. Then you must talk to your heart.

Talk? What?

Say anything, but be respectful. Say — maybe say, Heart, little heart, beat softly but never forget your job, the blood. You can whisper also, Remember, remember.

Here are some post-storm tips for victims:

Access and document your damage. Take numerous photos or videos of the damage. Don’t throw anything away unless your insurance company tells you to.
Make the necessary repairs to prevent further damage. Cover broken windows, holes, leaking roofs and damaged walls. Do not have permanent repairs made until your insurance company has inspected the property and you have reached an agreement with them on the cost of appropriate repairs. Move undamaged items to a safe location when necessary to prevent theft or additional loss.
Have your roof inspected by a trusted roofing contractor. If the damages are below or slightly over your deductible, you will want to pay for the repairs. If they exceed your deductible, turn the claim into your insurance carrier.
Contact your insurance company or agent after you have an estimate for repairs. Ask what forms, documents and information you need to provide to process your claim. Remember that replacement cost policies require the work to be completed within six months of the date of loss to receive the replacement cost payments that were withheld.
Save all receipts. If you made repairs to your property, save all receipts, including those from the temporary repairs that your insurance policy might cover.
Ask about additional living expenses. If your home is damaged to the extent that it is unlivable, ask your insurance provider if you have coverage for living expenses incurred while repairs are being made.
Remember these tips when you’re dealing with contractors to avoid fraud:

Always get more than one bid.
Check references and phone numbers. The Better Business Bureau collects contractor complaint information. You can contact the Construction Industries Board to verify that the contractor holds a valid license to do business in the state and that they carry liability insurance.
Don’t pay upfront, and don’t make your final payment until the job is complete.
Avoid contractors who offer to waive your deductible or promise a rebate (It’s against the law!).
Never sign a contract with blank spaces; always keep a copy for your records.
If you suspect contractor fraud, contact the Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General Consumer Protection Unit at 833-681-1895. Or call or text our office 918-600-2076.
